Removal firm adding additional charges

I posted a job on any van to move a flat from Dundee to l'derry.

A company accepted the job for £759 which I was very happy with and after reading their reviews I accepted.

A few weeks before the move they contacted me asking for a list of things to be removed so I sent this through. They called me asking if a 4 x2x2 would do. I wasn't able to picture this in my head when they called. But once they hung up I sent a messages saying that a Luton van would be a squese and to bring a Luton and a traitor also. They replied ok thank you. ( on the phone I realised they were polish and didn't have the best of English).

Moving day came and I was in l'derry waiting for van while family loaded the van in Dundee. I got a call to say the van was not fitting everything. When I asked family was it a Luton they said no it was only a small one.

I contacted the guy and he said that the van was bigger than what we agreed at 18m3 and he could arrange for the driver to go back and get the rest. I told him to do that. He said that he would have to charge an additional £500. ( Luton van 21m3)

I spoke to anyvan who said it was the company's responsability to be able to carry out the job and so they should pay any additional costs.

When the van came back I explained this and he refused to give me the rest of my stuff. the police were called and they got my stuff for me.

I have now recived an invoice for £500.

Has anyone any advice on where I stand with this?

    Seems very cheap.

Is it just the flat (if so, what will be put in its place to fill the gap in the building?) or the whole building?

I assume it will involve cranes, multiple lorries, and specialist reconstruction experts......

I imagine the security arrangements for this would add considerably to the cost.

    You could

    * pay up and move on. Enjoy your new home.
    * negotiate. Offer, say, £200 as a goodwill gesture to end the matter
    * refuse to pay (or simpky ignore them) and see if they take you to court. If they do, enter a defence based on your agreed contract.

Not if the traitor was dealt with using the freelance security forces available in Londonderry.

    Traitor eh? Hmmm...xx
  • Very, very cheap price! Ferry costs not far off that with a Luton. Good moving firms always visit first, before quoting.

Just spent nearly £5k on three moves in four months, from offshore to UK.
