Pay As You Go Fuel Costs
Options
Hi everyone, I was just wondering (for those that don't mind answering) how much you pay in fuel costs per month if you're on pay as you go energy tariffs with a pre pay card/key, more so for gas.
I've recently moved into a 2 bed maisonette by myself and pay about £25 a month in electric top up which seems about normal I guess.
What's bugging me is the gas costs. I appreciate it's winter so costs will be higher and as I haven't been in the property long I haven't had chance to make payments in the summer months to contribute to the winter bills, but I seem to topping up at least £60, £70+ per month.
There's no debt on the meter and I work full time, so I only have the boiler on for the equivelant of about 4/5 hours per day for a shower and heating throughout the day when I'm in from work as I can't afford to pay have it on any longer. My cooker is electric so that's not adding to the bills.
I was just wondering if anybody else is paying about the same? I have friends on the same meters and some have kids, they don't seem to pay as much as me. I'm with British Gas. Only reason I am with them is because they offer a home top up device for PAYG customers.

£60 or £70 a month for gas is not excessive in the winter.0

Also, should I continue paying about £60 a month all year round to top up the gas meter for winter or could I get away with paying less in the warmer months?0

Hello jp
gas ch or any heating is costly. You may save a bit by changing to DD payments.
With. Payment meter you will pay less in summer with the CH off.
It may be best to put a litte aside in summer to help with the winter billThe secret to success is making very small, yet constant changes.:)0 -
When I moved into this flat the pre pay meters were already here and they were with SSE. They wanted to charge over £50 per meter to have them switched to credit ones. So I asked British Gas who said they'd change them over to credit meters for free if I switched to them initially as a pay as you go customer. When I rang British Gas up to switch from PAYG to credit I failed the credit check even though I know my credit is good.0

British Gas do say that you pay exactly the same on PAYG as you would on credit meters, I'm not sure how true that is.0
