Ok, so I had mg car battery replaced and everything was fine but this morning, the beeping and speedo shooting up reoccurs.
Any further ideas?Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0 -

Yours is most likely an 063 type, so.......

Remember Bosch batteries are rebranded Varta and somewhere like Halfrauds will want at least double the price + fitting.
Fitting is a piece of p1ss, 10 min job with a cheap socket set and spanners. Even my GF has done it.
Basically, if I can build a car in my garage, then i'm damn sure my GF can fit a car battery and if my GF can do it, then ANYBODY can.
Afterwards she said it was worth doing, because now she doesn't feel so pathetic and helpless whenever she has a breakdown.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

On our Golf, the security system drains the battery so if it doesn't do many miles you end up with a flat battery.
Alternatively, poor alternator charging.
Most car parts shops will do you a free battery test. They should be able to say whether the battery has prematurely failed or it is flat. If it is flat then it is either being drained (heated rear window left on permanently wouldn't help for example) or it isn't charging or its been stood for long periods. It's a question of working out which.0 -
Beeping sound on start up usually comes with a message on the dash. Is it due an oil change or service?0

My Astra doesn't bleep when my seat belt isn't on however it does bleep with open doors and the ignition on.0

Thanks all, its not the same beep that happens when the door is open, seat belt not on etc. It would be higher pitched than that and when it makes the beep, the speedo shoots up.
The battery has been changed and makes relatively short trips, but does have a 60 mile round trip once a week which I would have thought would have been sufficient to charge the battery?Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0 -
Check the earth points from the battery, they usually go to one big bolt on the bulkhead, remove them and clean all the contacts and see if that helps.I do Contracts, all day every day.0

It'll charge the battery, but the damage has already been done.
Damage to the battery (through chemical reaction) occurs whenever it is not at 100% charge, the longer it stays under 100%, the faster it deteriorates.
This is a property almost completely unique to lead/acid batteries.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Even though it was replaced only 2 months ago? Would the 60 mile round trip every week not be sufficient to keep it topped up? It previously went 5 years with no issues.

Well I just explained the deal with lead acid batteries, not a lot more I can say.
The car recharges the battery when it's running, the battery uses huge amounts of power to start the car, this power must be replaced, if your journey is not long enough to replace that then the battery will not be at 100% and will start to degrade, regardless of whether it's 6 months old or 3 days.
Your speedo issue might be down to a speed sensor on one of the wheels. This is used for speed detection AND your ABS system.
Go for a short drive, get up to 30 mph, make sure there is nobody else around and then stand on the brakes REALLY hard (emergency stop), if your ABS does not work, your tyres wheels will lock up. It's important to test this, as some moron might have disconnected your ABS warning light to sell the vehicle.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”
