Taxing a car that still has free tax left

My mum is currently the registered keeper since the finance is in her name. We're changing it over to my name, after a lot of checking that the finance company are ok with that. We bought it last March and it came with a year's free tax. I've been reading a bit and realise that once the registered keeper is me, I'll need to tax it in my name.

I'm a bit unsure how to. Do I keep the green section 10 of the V5 and just go to the post office? When I checked online, it said to change the registered keeper name, I need to send the whole form off but on the form, it says to keep this section 10. Also, both my mum and I signed and dated it before christmas as we intended to do it then. After some concerns about the finance company and change of registration, we have held off until now. Will this cause problems as the date on it is from late December, instead of today?

Will what's left of the free tax then be lost, and my renewal date now be moved to the date the car changes to my name?

For you to tax it, you can do this online with the green slip, the reference number is on there, tax it as a new registered keeper.

When you do tax it, date the sale/transfer as that date, including cancelling the old insurance and starting the new - best to buy the tax from 1st February 2015.

Your Mum should send off the main part of the V5 document, dating the sale/transfer of registered keeper as the 31st January 2015 just change the date you signed it.

This way neither of you should lose out in a months wasted tax.

Do I just stroke out the old date we signed the V5 and write the new date below? Will the form still be accepted?

If I buy the tax online, do I need to wait until the DVLA have received the old V5? I hope to post it off tomorrow.

You tax it immediately using the "new keeper supplement" - V5C/2 - reference number, it is slightly different to the serial of the main V5C.

Yes, the form will be fine if you alter it, get your Mum to initial it.

You buy the tax online straight away, you dont wait for the V5 to be returned by the DVLA.
