Credit file to be checked for new job

I have just been offered a new job and have been informed that they will do a credit check on me for the position. The role is working within an financial firm but I am not directly dealing with money as will be working in an administrative role.
I have concerns about my credit file as I recently found out it is very poor due to a disputed late payment charge applied and this has severely impacted my credit file.
I did query this with HR and they stated that unless I have CCJs or bankruptcy against me there is no problem, but I am concerned that as my credit file is so poor just now it will be seen as a problem and will affect me getting the job.
Has anyone else had this with a job offer and how deep do they delve into your credit file?

It's entirely dependent on the company. Some only care about things like CCJs or bankruptcy, some may also have a problem with defaults, some might also have a problem with late payments too. When I worked for a bank several years ago one of the people who started with me had an issue with an incorrectly recorded late payment, they were told in essence that if it was correct, they were gone and if it was incorrect it needed to be removed before they'd let them out of training. Luckily for them they got it sorted within a day or two.
If HR is saying they only care about CCJs and bankruptcy then I see no reason to not take their word for it. I mean, how do they benefit from lying to you about it?0 -
True, they don't benefit from lying about it and wouldn't normally be concerned but it is such a good job and have only ever had this request when I worked for a bank years ago myself when I had no adverse credit.
I submitted my form yesterday so hoping they let me know that all is okay before the weekend as I can't help but worry.0 -

Well I wouldn't worry, it's not in their interest to not be completely honest about things that will result in them recinding the offer, they'll get to see everything so it's not like anyone would be able to bury the information.0
