In my experience, plastic is quieter than copper. Fully plastic house was silent, whilst copper house creaked, banged etc.

Not necessarily true, plastic pipes will still creak if they are allowed to contact wood joists etc. Regardless, it's still down to laziness and poor installation practices. If either copper or plastic are installed CORRECTLY, then they should be completely trouble free.
  • Just to add, plastic piping will fail if the central heating system is mixed i.e. plastic and copper if the central heating system isn't flushed out properly. The flux used on copper piping to solder the joints is very bad for the rubber seals inside the plastic connections causing them to fail. Manufacturers of the plastic option will not pay out on plastic piping failures due to flux damage. And just to say, they will also go all round the Wrekin to avoid covering any failure contrary to their claims of 25 year warranties. They will take away any faulty part and use every trick in the book to avoid accepting blame. That said plastic isn't that bad when installed with care and attention to stress placed on the fittings being kept to a minimum. You should really wet the fitting slightly to aid the pipe sliding into the fitting to avoid pinching the 'o' ring. There is a lubricant spray that helps.
