my wife has bought a car which has a tax disc onit valid until april, under the new road tax rules does she have to buy her own tax or can she continue until the disc runs out ( the sellers are happy for her to keep it if its allowed)

As soon as DVLA receive the new keeper supplement from the old owner, the tax will stop and they will send a cheque to the previous owner for the remaining full months left on the tax disc.
Although you may still have a tax disc, the vehicle itself will not be taxed, so you should tax it straight away. you can do it online or at a post office with the green new keeper part that the seller should of given you.0 -
thank you,
so she would probably be ok to drive the car home, but then needs to tax it?Smile and be happy, things can usually get worse!0 -

Or do it online as soon as you get home using the same green slip. There's no way IMO, that the system can work that fast!0

The whole new system has not been properly thought through as far as I can see.
Yes, you'll probably be OK driving it home - or stopping at a PO to tax it en route - and yes, the system probably doesn't update that fast - but what if you are stopped for a random check, or worse still involved in an accident before you tax it.
My interpretation of the tax not being transferable to the new owner is that the moment that you become the new owner it needs to be taxed by you.
So when exactly is that?
Surely it's the moment that you sign the part V5C that the seller has to send to DVLA and hand over the cash.
So I would suggest that you need to phone the DVLA to tax it before you drive it - or even start the engine, once the car is yours.
It's a flawed crap system - just don't get yourself in trouble because of it.0 -
Sellers do this to bump the price.
The tax expired the same day the V5 was signed.I do Contracts, all day every day.0 -
Curious as to how quick the system shows the vehicle as being taxed or SORN'd.
Buying a new car myself, But not selling the old one yet. So will SORN it and will keep checking to see how quickly it updates.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0
