Drain overflowing

Options
Hi all
Our drain outside that our kitchen pipes lead to gets blocked and overflows every couple of months. When we unblock it (normally with rods) there seems to be baby wipes and things in there that we don't use in our house (its just myself and my husband). The water in the drain is a muddy colour, smells and has what looks like broken up tissue in it as well as the baby wipes. What could this be? Is it the neighbours drain flowing into ours? Really puzzled and I don't know how to go about fixing this. Please can someone help?
Thanks

  • It appears that the drain is shared - your sewerage undertaker will have responsibility for it. Just call them and you may never have to clean that drain again:)

I cannot tell you how to fix this problem other than to find out who in your row of houses is putting these down the toilet but to explain through your garden is a sewer pipe that runs down hill towards the main road where it connects into the main sewer so the houses either to your left or right flush the toilet or empty the sink, basin or bath this runs from their house into their drain and from there runs through your garden to the main sewer in the road. With all the fat and other things that people dispose of through those ways the small sewer pipe under your garden gets blocked causing the problem you are having
You rod it and as you say you are then ok for a couple of months then the cycle starts all over again. Without finding out what house is putting these baby wipes/tissues down the toilet this I am afraid will be an ongoing problem for you.

If the sewer serves someone else's property as well as yours then it's a public sewer and is the responsibility of your local water company.
    still raining
  • Thanks for your replies. I am going to ask next door neighbours if they have been putting baby wipes down the toilet. I will call the water board and see if they can help as it seems to be clogging up even without the baby wipes. The tissue type stuff and gunk coming through our drain is vile.
