Any tips on buying a sofa bed?

Options
Hi folks,

Looking for a sofa bed for our sitting room and wonder if anyone can offer any tips.

Lots around online but a few of the places I visited hadn't any in stock, and as it will be used as a sofa a lot of the time, want to be able to try it out at least to see if it would make a comfy enough sofa. One of the shops I visited weren't very helpful in this regard, seemed to think I should take a blind gamble and just order it. Wonder would they do it themselves!.

Anyway £500 is the limit I want to go to, did see this online

and seemed to get some good reviews, though its hard to know if its genuine reviews or not, a bit put off by the almost £40 delivery though.

Homebase seem to have plenty as well, such as this one,

But then again hard to find any in local store to try.

Any tips on buying appreciated.

To be honest I tried sleeping on a leather sofa bed and hardly slept a week,
you actually slide all over the place to I would definitely recommend a cloth one.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

we got one from ikea. I can't tell you what its swedish name was, but it was around £500, came flat packed so it was fetched home in a fairly small hatchback, it's been slept on without complaint and the mechanism to convert it into a bed is fairly simple

This one is very nice and quite comfy too. It can seat 4 or 5 people.
  • Hi, we have also had a quest for a sofa bed, but for a study.
We found in that price range the options were

-A clic clac/beddinge type sofa which would be quite a comfy bed but not a snuggly/squishy sofa

-A comfy conventional looking sofa but with a thin mattresses pull out bed on a flimsy frame.

-A day bed with cushions like ikea Hemnes

-A corner/chaise sofabed like the ikea Lugnvik.

For our study/guestroom/Xbox room we bought the Lugnvik (there were 2 other alternatives at Ikea) it's firm foam on an mdf frame with cushion backs. Very solid. V comfy as a bed with a mattress topper to soften the firmness. As a sofa it's fine but I probably wouldn't have it as a main living room sofa, but would get another for a second lounge or playroom. For a more compact room for the same use id get a clic clac or beddinge.

The Hemnes is very comfortable and more a bed but high to sit on, it's compact so great in an upstairs room.

For our main living room if we get a sofa bed in the future is get one that looks like a normal sofa but has the bed folded into the frame. As they are a less comfy bed id use mattress topper. We have a john lewis expensive one which we put on the guest bed instead of ours when they visit. So we enjoy it most of the time but for guests it then makes a much comfier stay.

So I guess it depends on whether you want it more bed or sofa. Maybe see if there's any big sofa outlet places you could visit to try? Especially those that have end of life pieces etc cheaper?

That's the 'next one up' to the one we bought so a bit comfier. We would have got it but it was just a little too big for the space. Id recommend visiting and trying them. We got ours delivered and found it fine to put together.
