If you are windows XP-you may need to download the windows XP TCP/IP patch. XP limits the number of simultaneous connections to 10, with the patch you can whack it up to what you want, I have mine set at 300, this is usually helpful when watching streaming video/using p2p apps to watch free sports etc. It may not make a difference because, as others have suggested, the ITV website suffers bad congestion at prime time

I always thought this was a bit of a myth and a misunderstanding of what the patch is actually for. I may be wrong but I've seen it described before as a bit of an urban myth. I don't know for sure but that's the context in which I've heard of this tip before.

Yeah, really is just a myth.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

I used it because I got hundreds of 4226 errors when trying to watch football online, didnt have a clue what the patch did but it stopped the errors and seemed (maybe just placebo) to improve things regarding buffering. I might try uninstalling it and see if it makes any difference or not.
