Glazing, reducing noise. Laminate/float or triple?

Options
I would like to have glazing installed which reduces noise from a busy road.

I had thought of having triple glazing installed, though when I mentioned this to one installer they instead recommended (I think it was) laminate with a float which apparently gives better sound insulation than triple.

Would anyone have any comments or suggestions about this?

Thank you.

If you choose an installer that has gas argon filled units, this will slightly improve the sound insulation, as it is denser than air.

Anglian are one company, although some Moneysavers don't like their installations.

Personally, at our last house, they were very good, especially when there was a problem the guy rectifying things couldn't have tried harder. Price was better than local company with a poor reputation.

Butworth getting some recommends of your own

I remember watching a Sarah Beeny show where the couple wanted to replace the single glazing in a house right next to the road. Even though Sarah proved to them that decent secondary glazing would offer better and cheaper sound insulation than triple glazing, they went for the posh new tripple glazed windows anyway.

I've also read that triple glazing is only really worth while in extremely cold climates... Can't remember where I read this tho :-(

Yes, I have since learned that triple glazing is not effective at sound insulation and the laminate is much better.

However, I hadn't thought of secondary glazing.

    CUTTING OUT NOISE

Both types of windows are also great at cutting out noise pollution, however secondary glazing takes the winners medal here. Unlike the double-glazing sealed units, the two different pieces of glass in secondary glazing act as independent barriers to the transmission of noise. The greater the cavity between the two panes, the better the dampening effect – so double-glazing which has panes relatively close together is less good at cutting out noise.

Can secondary glazing be added to double glazing?

    I don't see why not :-)
