Weird problem trying to send NTL email via GMail.

I have two old ntlworld.com email addresses I want to continue to use but via gmail.

For some reason I can receive OK on both, but only 'send' using 1.
When I send using the other one I get this message back every time....

Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently:

?????@hotmail.co.uk

Technical details of permanent failure:
Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the relay smtp.ntlworld.com by smtp.ntlworld.com. [62.254.26.221].

The error that the other server returned was:
500 Authentication Denied (VM311)
(SMTP AUTH failed with the remote server)

I have checked the settings on both within gmail and they are identical.

I can also send from the faulty address in both Virgin webmail and Incredimail on my PC, which I assume means it is not the virgin servers causing the problem.

So in a nutshell, two ntlworld.com email addresses on the same account, both receive emails fine, both send fine using VM or Incredimail, but only one will 'send' using gmail.

Any help as to where the problem might lie would be appreciated.

The problem is the same on my PC and iMac.

Thanks

I suggest removing and re-adding the problematical ntlworld.com email in gmail settings (Under Account and Import tab, then under Send mail as:...)
If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.

How is the working email setup ?
perhaps it has a different outgoing server for some reason

usually the smtp server will block anyone sending unless they are on the network.

ie, you have to be connected to virgin to be able to use ntlworld smtp server.

gmail itself isn't on the virgin network.
althou im not sure how gmail sends other mails as i've never used it for that
  • Thanks for the replies.

I have deleted the offending email address a number of times.

Both of the NTL addresses have exactly the same details.

    SMTP.ntlworld.com
    Port 465
    Secured using SSL

Strangely enough, in my Incredimail settings the SMTP server is virginmedia.com
but when I try and use this in gmail, i get this message....

Authentication failed. Please check your username/password.
    [Server response: 535 Authentication Credentials Invalid (VM300) code(535) ]

    Thanks again.

    Try smtp.virginmedia.com instead

    Re the Op.

You say "old email address", are you still an NTL/VM customer?
If not the addresses could have been cancelled.

Also if you're not connecting to the internet via a VM IP address their SMTP servers may well refuse to deal with the emails, as that is/was a very basic anti-spam measure.

But I think smtp.ntlworld.com still works, as it's what I've got my ntl addresses set to use :) (I doubt VM would kill it off as they've still got millions of customers using their original NTL addresses, so they've still got the domains up/forwarded).
  • Yes, still a VM customer and both addresses send and receive using VM website and Incredimail.

    Both receive in Gmail.

Makes no sense that two ntlworld.com email addresses with exactly the same settings in Gmail but one sends and the other can't.

    Thanks again for the replies.

Did you try registering the address that doesn't work as I suggested?

The second link you posted confirms that the settings in Gmail are correct.

Not sure what you mean by registering with ISP.

Both addresses are from the same account, so I would imagine if one works then the other should.

    Thanks

The only email addresses that will work when used in the "sender" field are the ones registered with your ISP (or whoever's providing your SMTP server).

I don't know how Virgin have taken over NTL email accounts and registered them with their SMTP servers, and whether they automatically register aliases. It sounds like that's what's preventing you from sending using the second address.
