Yes, it is on their list, I attempted to set it up, always get this error..SimplePay cannot be enabled as it only supports stores with USD as their default currency. Go to the Settings -> Currency Settings page to change your default currency.
It has been talked about on the BC forums...
http://forum.bigcommerce.com/f5/pay-with-amazon-20698/?highlight=amazon+paymentsI don't remember having any particular issues with de-Americanising our store.
I paid a developer to go through it and change it all over, would have been easier if BC had an option to 'UK' ise everything.0 -

3DCart has a nice feature you would like - it has a language section where you can change all the Americanised words to your preferred UK version. You just change it in the table which automatically reconfigures it everywhere globally throughout the site.0 -

Have taken a trial tonight, out of interest, just looking at set up and Linnworks integration.
Back to OP's question, have also run Woocommerce, which I find easy to set up and work with. Many many add ons, some free, some not and plenty of support.
Doesn't work well with Linnworks though.0 -
Some really useful comments here, thanks.
Stock control not an issue for us, as we make our own items, so theoretically we have an infinite number of items that we sell (hence the need for a solution that allows a very large number of products). Looked at 3DCart but the product limit on the cheaper packages rules it out for us.
Had taken a BC trial as well as a shopify one, and probably do prefer BC out of the two. Hadn't noticed the american slant on the BC sites until mentioned, but I don't think it would put me off to be honest.
We don't take Amazon payments so not a problem - we are only really interested in having paypal payments as most of out transactions are less than £5, so we need the mircopayments account that gives us a lower transaction fee.
Will have a look at woocommerce.
Thanks for all the contributions.0 -
I got lumbered with the task of getting a friend's physical shop online a while back and spent 2 months researching such sites before realising that the huge majority appeared to be based on Drupal with a few minor mods.
As he then told me he had a £50 budget, I ended-up building him a site based on Drupal with a load of free plug-ins. It worked well and allowed people to pay via Paypal, Google Checkout and Skrill.
I'm not a web developer, so this was all new to me, but with plenty of info online on how to set things up, I managed to get the whole thing functioning.
In the end, the guy lost interest in the online business world (he was expecting to be making £1,000 p/week from launch day, but did no promotions about his new web portal), so the site no longer exists.Never Knowingly Understood.

Some useful advice here. Worpdress / Woocommerce is okay for small sites but I would not recommend it for large scale eCommerce - the plugins for handling inventory management etc. / Admin. functions aren't suitable.
Given the number of products you have (not overly large but enough to make navigation a consideration) I would suggest writing down your requirements in frist instance and then narrowing choice from there.
So for example which solutions:
- Provide good navigation structure: Categories > Products
- Integrate with the payment system I plan on using (Merchant Account, Amazon Payments, Paypal, etc.)
- Offer a easy to use Admin interface (granted, you'll only find out by trialling the software)
- Integrate with any external stock control systems I use
- Are current / actively supported (check Google trends / BuiltWith)
- Provide UK based support (not essential but nice to have)
- Offer the kind of design templates suited to your niche
You can then use this list to narrow your choice to two or three platforms to look at in earnest. Depending on whether you plan to DIY or outsource any design / development you also need to consider experience of any eCommerce partners.
I won't post a link here but you can find me at Onestop Webshop. Am happy to discuss more if you want to PM or call me.
