'Floating ISP'

Can anyone tell me how I find out what my ISP is when I log on?
I used to be an another forum which was a closed forum, I once got accused of letting someone else log in with my log in details until someone said I had a 'floating ISP which changed every time I switched off and switched on again.
I was on either freeserve or Orange then, can't remember which as they changed,
I'm now on EE fibre optic broadband and would like to know if my ISP still changes when I shut down and open up again.
Anyone know?
TIA

Do you mean IP, rather than ISP? As in IP address?

Try googling "what is my IP address", there are a few websites that'll tell you what your IP address is.

What you had was a Dynamic IP address. Many ISPs still use them, but in this 24/7 world we now live in most people's IP address is "sticky" ... that is, technically it is dynamic but ISPs tend to log IP addresses to modem MAC addresses, so when a device disconnects then reconnects it will get back the same IP address (unless another device happens to have snatched it in the meantime).
  • Just go to speedtest.net and run a test, that tells you your IP and ISP.

    IP not ISP

When your modem connects to your ISP the ISP gives you an IP address from its available range. As Fibre is normally Always On that means you arent connecting and disconnecting frequently and so whilst your IP may change each time it happens the changes will be infrequent unless you often turn your modem/ router off.

You can choose to have a static IP rather than dynamic IP so that it always stays the same but this really isnt necessary for the 99% of us and so its an optional extra though some ISPs limit it to being an option for business users where its more common to want to have it, particular with older ways of using technology
