You are right energyworker , we sometimes get to the box and then for whatever reason give up on getting to the meter, latch is broke and too stiff to turn or box lid glued shut with paint etc. Theres something odd about the meter. Today I sorted out a problem which had had many estimates and it was due to a meter exchange gone wrong where the occupier had been getting bills 2.8 times too much. He had been submitting reads but they had rejected them and estimated.0

A favourite of mine was a lovely bloke who was angry as I couldn't arrange someone to come out once a month, clear a load of stuff out of a corner of his garage as it was too heavy for him to do and read his meter.
But yes, meter exchanges are a nightmare. Particularly if carried out by the previous supplier but databases not corrected to reflect this.0 -
So why did it take 5 years to get a real reading.
I would say I would pay the money's over 5 years,,,,
and gas and electric was at a cheaper rate then .....so you might be over charged“Life isn't about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.”

Good morning charliebear2303 and welcome to the forum.
I'm sorry you've had to post on here with this issue, I completely understand how horrid this is for you.
Some of the posters and Cardew have given you some very good advice and information here, but I just wanted to come on and help where I can.
I agree that the billing code probably won't apply as we have been billing you and sending you bills showing estimated meter reads.
It does sound like a case of the meter being read but then the reads not being used as they didn't appear to fall in line, therefore, using another estimate.
Do you have an online account? Do you have paper bills through the post? If you have an online account we may have sent you emails asking for an up to date read. It may also ask on some of your bills to contact us with an up to date meter reading.
Your account should have a complaint raised and be going through an investigation with a complaint manager, they'll look through all of the details, what we've sent you, what we've asked, if we asked for meter reads etc and this will establish what's happened and what will be offered.
We may offer a longer period of time to re-pay the balance, we may offer to reduce the bill if you wanted to pay it off in one go.
We will however, re-bill the account over the correct prices relevant at the time, so all the usage won't be charged at today's prices.
I hope this is resolved quickly for you, but do let me know if you need some help.
Thank

Hard to know why this became a problem. I'm with EON. I read my meters regularly because
a. I prefer a real bill to an estimated one
b. because EON prompt me to
Occasionally they send round someone to read a meter however entering my readings online is very easy to do.0 -

The OP, like many people, was not aware that his bills were based on estimated readings; and meter readers had read the meter. He was happy with the amount he was paying and saw no reason to dispute the bills.
Also, as I explained in the post above, even if he had read the meter and entered it on-line, it would still not have solved his problem. Once there is a large discrepancy between the last bill meter reading and actual meter reading, the computer will continue to ignore that reading and continue with estimated meter readings.
As the Eon rep also stated:It does sound like a case of the meter being read but then the reads not being used as they didn't appear to fall in line, therefore, using another estimate.0 -
The OP, like many people, was not aware that his bills were based on estimated readings;
This will be not understanding that E after a reading is for estimated and C for Customer Reading. None of this would have happened if OP had taken some responsibility for his own bills,0
