Gas not being paid for

A while ago I moved house. I contacted the utilities to get the gas and electricity in my name and pay what I owed from where I was leaving. I believed I was on a dual fuel tariff paying for both. However I discovered that I'm only paying for electricity. I contacted the supplier about this and they told me that my house doesn't have a gas supply. It does as it's heating the house and the water....and there are 2 meters in boxes outside, one of which I'm sure is a gas meter.
Can anyone tell me how to get this sorted out? I'm obviously happy(for the moment) not to be paying for gas but what happens if/when it's discovered and I'm asked to pay for all I've used?

Thanks for your time.

Mary

    Hello
There is obviously a mix-up in the great database in the sky. Go to the gas meter, and take a reading, and make sure you keep a note of it. Whatever happens, you will have a baseline from which you know you have to pay for the gas.

Look on the meter for a meter serial number.

Call the company which admits to supplying your electricity, and ask them to look for the gas meter serial number in the national database.

Maybe they will be able to find it. So far they have tried looking up using your address, and that hasn't helped.

This happened to me when I moved into my present house. SSE said I had no gas supply at my house. I told them I did, and was using it to cook with, heat the water and the radiators, they said I was mistaken as I had no gas supply at my house.

I even sent them a photo of the meter showing the serial number. Then got a letter back informing me I had accidentally photographed someone else's meter.

Once when I rang they told me to ring transco, so I did and they told me there was no gas supply to my house, no pipes and no meter.

One day I got really annoyed with the person on the phone telling me they never make mistakes and I was mistaken when I said I had gas. So I shouted "Yes you do make mistakes, you even make a mistake with my postcode every time you write to me".

The person then asked what the mistake was, and I told them the last letter was wrong, and what is should be.

They then typed in my correct postcode and said "Oh yes, you do have gas"

It turned out there was a mistake in my postcode on their database, and as they used that postcode to select my full address from a list, they had my address wrong for the gas meter. Right house number, wrong street.

I was told they can only search using the postcode, so when I was giving them my correct postcode nothing was showing for my address.

So it may be worth you checking what postcode they put on letters they send to you. If you don't know what mistake they have in your postcode they can't find you, and if they can't find you, you have no gas.

I wouldn't mind, but I knew they had my postcode wrong from the very beginning, but didn't think it important so didn't bother mentioning it. If I had I would have saved myself a lot of hassle.

I had assumed that as I was giving them my name and full address they were searching for my by either name, house no and street etc. But they said no, they can only search by postcode, and if the postcode you give doesn't match the one in their database they can never find you.

So, if they have your postcode wrong, it is down to you to find out and tell them.
  • Thanks for the replies.

I called the number for gas supplies in the link supplied by Hengus (with the correct address and postcode) They have no supplier listed for my property!

I'll check the meter's serial number at the weekend (it's dark when I leave and when I get home) and try and track down the supplier that way.

If I can't find out who I need to be paying then I guess the gas is free..... :D

At the very least save the money to pay for what you are using and keep a careful record of your meter readings at least monthy (take photgraphs of the meter showing the serial number as well as the reading) so when someone does discover that they are supplying you there'll be some evidence of what the meter readings were and you'll have some money in the bank towards paying for it.
Waiting for something to happen will just cause you a lot of grief in the future especially if you haven't been saving the money or meter readings
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers
  • I've photographed both meters once a week since we moved in and put aside the same amount of money as I used to pay my gas direct debit in my previous house. Hopefully that will cover any bill, when it arrives!

Mary, I would suggest the same what ever you do make sure you save enough to cover most if not all of the bill.
