Had an interesting call this morning which I proved was a scam.
Phane rang, person other end in broken English said he was calling from "Accident Verification Service". Immediately I thought this could be a suspect call so I decided to play along to see what happens.
I was asked if I had had an accident in the last 3 years, I told them I had....it this point he became very friendly and said that he had a compensation payment ready to send to my bank. All he required was my bank details in full.
At no time was I asked anything about the "accident" such as simply could I confirm when it happened...obviously I could have given a date and he could have confirmed any date I gave him, but they didn't seem to be as smart as to do this to keep up the appearence of a genuine call.
I asked him how much the compensation was and what company will be paying it...I was told this info would be told once they had the bank details.
I said that really this sounded like a scam particularly as I had not had an accident in the past three years. He got a bit shirty so I just said goodbye.
The phne rang again within a minute and he said "How dare you hang up on me!" So I did again straight away, again the phone rang so I left it to go onto voicemail. The message he left was highly obscene.
Luckily their calls leave their number on 1471. As a result of being with Talktalk I could bar the number right away.
For info, the number they called from was 01441614080000. If you Google it you will see plenty about this number and others, this one is based in Burmuda.
The thing I don't like about this is that they had my number though.

Your number would be readily available to anyone that wishes to buy a directory .0

So obviously being ex directory and registered with the TPS is a waste of time.0

Expect more scammers.
You're going to need a bigger boat.0 -
They won't have been calling from Bermuda. Scammers use VOIP telephone providers so they can present any caller-id they want and can change it from time to time.0

Yep, we are both ex directory and registered with the TPS and 90% of calls to our landline now are scams, marketing or for the past 3 months loan companies and debt collectors trying to trace someone using our number but who we don't know.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. I find the most effective and satisfying technique is to play simple Simon and waste their time for as long as possible. Eventually they hang up and never call again.
While I am wasting their time they can't be calling someone else."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

I get so many calls. The landline isn't so bad because I don't tend to give that out anywhere, but clearly some 'trusted third parties' are not as trustworthy as you'd hope and I must have forgotten to uncheck too many boxes in the past!
I got a call about PPI the other day and asked him which account it was, he said he wasn't sure but one of my accounts definitely had some to claim back and so that is what he wanted to investigate. I said I wasn't interested and he sounded annoyed and went. I've since had a few text messages about having money waiting for me - I've had them before but three in the space of an hour or so from various numbers was excessive and I am suspicious that it was something to do with him.
I enjoy telling people who've asked if I've been in a road accident in the last few years that I get the bus. Of course that doesn't mean I couldn't have had an accident (e.g. in a relative's car) but that doesn't seem to click and they apologise and go.
I have got so many blocked numbers on my mobile now. Thankfully I worked out how to block the start of numbers too, so 0845 and 0843 are gone now. I also ignore calls from most places unless they have our area code.
I sometimes get calls for 'Andrew McFarlane' near Birmingham. I tell them all that I've no idea who he is but that I wish he wouldn't give my number out! They're mostly pretty decent about that though to be honest, and seem genuine when they apologise. It's mostly calls about football betting and energy deals.0 -

The flaw with that for me would be it would also be wasting my time. I just don't answer calls unless I know who the number is.0 -

For business reasons I have to answer the phone. If it is silent for more than one second I hang up, but the other day I managed to engage in conversation with a gentleman who was telling me about all the viruses I was downloading onto my PC. I got bored of him remarkably quickly so told him to f**k off. Very loudly.
I usually just hang up but with these sort of scum I swear at them. Cheers me up:D0
