Afternoon All
Just after a bit of advice, we have renovated almost all of the house but the windows are going to be a step to far for at least a couple of years untill adequate funding can be saved.
We currently have Oak-framed simgle glazing in all but 2 rooms (2 rooms have PVC double glazing due to rotten wood in the frames) I've been looking into some way of making the rooms with the older windows a bit warmer without actualy replacing them. The obvious choice was to seal the gaps, re-paint the frames and put foam seals where the windows open.
I've come accross these "double glazing" kits and some of the claims seem to be a bit far fetched, iw as wondering if anyone had any experience with them, and if they actualy work as stated? Examples are:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/StormGuard-Window-Draught-Excluder-Secondary-Double-Glazing-Film-6-Sq-Meters/161172422370?_trksid=p2047675.c100009.m1982&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20140328180637%26meid%3D753c5b50a17c42d0bfb3c870f2d0a6ce%26pid%3D100009%26rk%3D5%26rkt%3D10%26sd%3D300979339768
and
http://www.amazon.co.uk/DOUBLE-GLAZING-DRAUGHT-INSULATION-WINDOWS/dp/B004L9QMJO
If these actualy work half as well as advertised, can anyone tell me what brands are best, how long they last before replacment? How much difference they ACTUALY make? etc?
Regards
Paul

Wilkinsons sell this sort of thing too.
Many years ago we used to do this once we discovered it, it was brilliant but obviously we took it off in spring. Really rustic though compared to what you see in the links.
Ours was just clear polythene stuck on the inside with industrial sellotape.
It certainly stopped the windows freezing up on the inside and made the bedrooms warmer.
I would definitely try it.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
99p stores were selling this before Christmas, maybe you can find some to try there?0

I have used these kits and they do a great job but the adhesive tape can be very difficult to remove when you take them down.0

How airtight your existing windows?
I tried to use the heat-shrink "clingfilm" stuff at my old flat, which had very draughty sash windows. It was utterly useless. It rustled like a crisp packet any time the wind blew. In a string wind, it just came unstuck from the window frame, letting the cold air in.If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -
Thanks for your replies, espeicaly the 99p stores one, ill deffo be hunting there for some!
Removal of tape won't be an issue, the hope is that within the next 2 years or so we will be able to afford to replace the windows with more modern ones, we just don't really want to do it on finance.
As for draught, to be fair their pretty well sealed now that I've been attacking them with foam strips and a sealant gun, their stiull quite cold though, which I assume is simply because their old single-pane glass?0
