It is looking a little bleak. I thought she was doing really well getting stuck into technology. But this is a major setback. We always assume that there's some remedy when we forget passwords.

There is - you get them reset.

Just do as the previous poster said and put it into recovery mode. It's detailed on Apples website here: http://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT201263

You will need to install iTunes on your laptop first and create a new Apple ID if you cannot remember any details of the original. Bear in mind this method of recovery is only possible if the FindMyiPhone (which can track your Apple devices) app wasn't installed and activated on the iPad previously.

Really being able to bypass passwords or recover them easily is a waste of a password as anybody can break your security .The actual remedy has been around for years write them down disguised if possible .

An elderly friend of mine had exactly the same problem. He rang Apple support. They asked for the serial number of the iPad and a couple more questions and then talked them through it. It is all back working ok now so this might be worth a try.

Will have to get her to bring it round and we'll try that. Actually it sounds familiar. We might have tried that. I think the wall we hit was that she doesn't have an itunes account. We've been working on this since before Christmas.

What iPad is it? What model? I'd suggest you reset it first, press and hold power till the Apple logo appears, that does a hard reset it may help if Safari (internet browser) is crashing by resetting it.

Its not impossible but hard to set up an iPad without an Apple account, and you can't buy any apps without an Apple account.

Before you do anything look at the iPads's desktop. Can you list by name the apps on it? If there's anything that anyone here recognises as having being installed via iTunes then a restore may not help, as you are back to the not knowing the iCloud password after the restore, and as has been said if it's linked to an iCloud account then you will not beable to restore it without that password. Have you tried to go to iforgot.apple.com and entered as much as you can. When it asks the questions knowing the questions may help you both to remember the answers.

There is no mail on the "desktop" of an iPad, I'm assuming its the MAIL app. What's the ISP that your mum uses? if it's not Apple, can you or her contact them and get the password reset, it may take a while but should be possible, again without knowing security details its hard for anyone to know for sure its her.

She can then request the Apple password reset and pick up the email.
  • I had the exact problem recently. I bought another Apple device (an Ipod Touch) and when trying to make a purchase on iTunes given that it was the first time that i had used the device, Apple locked me out because I couldn't remember the daft set of security answers. In desperation I sent two emails but didn't hear from them in a month. Eventually called Apple in the UK and ranted down the phone to them about these stupid security questions.

The result being that the man who eventually answered the call gave me a new login password to gain the "manage my id/info" online at Appleid.com - it does pay to shout down the phone evidently. That way you can choose to change your details, add whatever password you want AND THEN SCREENSHOT the whole detail and keep it on a memory stick in a private place. Or alternatively write down the details.

I'll try to get it from her in the next few days and have a look at what apps there are. I don't imagine there's anything other than what came with it.
