Moved and missed credit card bills

Options
I moved address 6 months ago and forgot to update my credit card company (post office)
This is the only bill not paid by direct debit and as a result of my oversight, a £50 bill has trebled and I have 6 missed payments and a closed account on record.

Is there anything I can do to rectify this, or will this now be a permanent fixture on my credit rating? I am in the process of buying a house and am very concerned this will affect my mortgage application.

Thanks in advance

Defaults will remain on your record for 6 years. Sorry to say there's probably very little you can do about this. Had you missed 1 payment, then you could have contacted them, explained your oversight, and many lenders will remove the marker. But to allow it to go on for 6 months is pushing it.

Did it not strike you as odd that a card you'd (presumably) been paying each month suddenly stopped sending statements ?

I must admit I rarely use the card, just for holidays. I had just bought some fuel with it the month before I moved as I snapped my debit card & completely forgot/thought I had it set up to direct debit automatically.
I appreciate its my own fault, but its a really annoying not only because of the expense, but because of the negative outcome it may have on a mortgage application.
  • You could ask them nicely, explain and apologise. It's your only option really.
