recommendations for vacuum

Ok brother phoned earlier to say his vax is broken, something about the dust collection hinge or the filter fastener snapped anyway was half asleep but I don't think its worth buying replacement parts so he wants a new bagless cyclinder vacuum.
My brother is blind so finds it hard to do the research and shop around, he has a budget of under £100 ideally he said between £60-£80. It more easy of use and will do a decent job on carpet and laminate floor than is the vacuum quiet when in use.
As he is blind he does make a mess when cooking or eating in front of the tv. So vacuum must be able to pick up for example herbs/spices in the kitchen or crisps that hes stepped on in the living room.
I've had a quick look at some vax but all the reviews have been a mixed extremes from 5 stars then 1 star for the same vax.
So can anyone help by recommending some vacuums. Flooring in his house is living room at least 80% wool, kitchen/dinner is laminate (mdf?) and I believe the rest of the carpets are man made material.

Henry.
He would have to try pretty hard to break one.0 -
A Henry Extra, it has a brush on it.
I have had one for donkeys years and it just goes on and on and on.
Brilliant little workhorse, that's why most Builders use them.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Yep the Henry would be ideal but he wants bagless and I think its out of his price range. I think the problem with the vax as he can't see what he is doing when changes or empties the container he just jams it back in with brute force.
They might have changed the Henry since I was a kid but I remember them being big and heavy to move them upstairs and downstairs.
I should mention he doesn't have pets but a neighbour cat comes to visit him occasionally also he had asthma so I don't know if this information well help?
Any other options I can put to him?0 -
Anything at that budget is going to be short lived and poor quality. Spend nearer £200 new and you'll get a decent machine that will last.
If you only spend £60-80 then the brand really doesn't matter.
At that price (plus about £30) I'd suggest a refurbed upright clutched Dyson, DC07 or DC14.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

I was shocked when we got ours as it is easily lifted and you can talk to the person hoovering without having to get right in their face and shout!freezspirit wrote: »I should mention he doesn't have pets but a neighbour cat comes to visit him occasionally also he had asthma so I don't know if this information well help?
Henry may not be what he needs, but not for the reasons you have quoted above.0 -
Year ago I bought a Vax Air Reach Upright Vacuum Cleaner U90-MA-R, for £100 on Amazon. Start at £80 on ebay.
I love it, trawled through reviews on all types, and this was only one with consistently good reviews and at a sensible price.
Can't fault the thing. Relatives have dysons, they are horrible to use in comparison.0 -
Henry is a brilliant vacuum. I've had mine best part of 15 years. Neber failed. It gets kicked down tne stair, falls out if my van and never breaks. I use mine without bags and never a problem. Very simple operation, which I guesss is ideal for a blind person.
I recently changed the hose. Less than £12.
And under £100.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0
