Best netbook/small laptop for work?

We have a couple of Asus T100TA's - older models I believe? - and they do the job in terms of features but the battery life on them is pretty poor and they don't seem to charge as quick as they drain so I've had it turn off whilst plugged in.

It's okay as a secondary machine (ie. for email when working on a different laptop) but for constant use it's poor.

We don't need anything particularly fancy but has to be Windows unfortunately.

Budget is around £200-300.

Any suggestions?

    Sorry, that'd help!

Generally speaking they're used as secondary machines so mostly for email but also use remote log in to the company server to run payroll & accounting software. Spreadsheets are big too.

couple of new batteries would cost £30-ish :) you might even find higher-capacity ones for a couple of quid more...

They claim up to an 11 hour battery life for that model. But there is definitely a battery drain problem. Go to this thread and work backwards through the suggestions.

Can I hijack this thread and ask also for 'best small laptop for work'

Friend has just hired a new manager for his other farm which is 40 miles away so he wants the guy to have a 'best value' Windows laptop to do some light internet work, viewing and exchanging documents and spreadsheets etc.

    Any suggestions for around £250/300??
  • The best small laptop for work I would say is the 11" Macbook air, but unfortunately that starts at £749. I mention it not because of the OS, or the 'sexy' aluminium, but because it has an excellent keyboard and trackpad and is very portable.

What really makes a great work laptop is the bits you touch all the time - the keyboard and trackpad - because almost any modern processor is fine for what you do with it and the built in graphics the same.

I would go with whoever else is going to use the machine to a large shop and have a try to see what seems to work for you. Then, if you have some budget to spare, focus on a screen that looks good (resolution doesn't really matter), and a SSD to make it start up and load programs quickly.
