Sparking television

Hi, we've got a JVC LCD TV, about 5 years old.

OH turned it on, came in kitchen we both heard strange sound coming from it, both rushed in to look and it was sparking behind the screen repeatedly. Turned it off, sparking stopped, turned it back on and no sparks. Still no sparks 5 minutes later.

Obviously concerned, any ideas what could have caused it? Strange that it didn't return. Will ensure it is fully unplugged overnight and when not in use.
Mortgage remaining: £42,260 of £77,000 (2.59% til 03/18 - 2.09% til 03/23)

Savings target June 18 - £22,281.99 / £25,000

Just clarifying the TV is in living room, not kitchen, sounded confusing when I retread it!

Apparently, all electrical devices contain a smoke within their housing that is essential to their operation.

Should this smoke escape, then said device is what's called in the trade 'fubar'.

I'm also told, by those who know, that most lektrikal devices celebrate their coming of age with alcohol, sex & fireworks.

The coming of age of TV type devices just happens to be around 5yrs I'm told.

If there is no alcohol in the house, & the toaster/hoover don't looked flushed, then I'd say that whatever you are asking us is OK.

So long as it's not near your curtains.

Might I suggest that a good time for this TV to be 'not in use' might be, let's say, all day, every day?

Some thing has failed, I'd guess in the backlight to the backlight power board, and its probably a few pennies worth of capacitors.

That said it will not get better, either get it looked at or throw it out, if it behaves you'll trust it and leave it plugged in and honestly in this case money saving is not the priority.

That said getting it looked at may cost as much as a new TV, so long terms its probably best replaced

Interesting. A component failure that doesn't stop the TV from working.

My guess is that an interference suppression capacitor near the mains cable connection to the PSU board has failed. You'll see a burn mark on it. It's not necessary for the working of the TV but the TV will now be putting interference onto the mains supply. That might or might not affect something else.
