Bought a Sony Smart tv earlierthis month. All set up perfectly and wireless connection etc all ok.

I want to be able to look at photos on the tv via the pc My photos are in named folders on the pc. However, when viewed on the tv it does not pick up that the photos are in folders, just shows all the photos as thumbnails.

Our blu-ray player can also be used to view photos from the computer and when using that in conjunction with the tv the blu-ray menu shows the folders as they are on the pc.

Any idea how I can get the tv to recognise the folders or at the end of the day is it just simpler to use the blu-ray player?

It's probably easier to use the Blu-ray player if already does what you want. There is no standardised way smart TVs display things like photos and you probably can't change the way it does it either.

You haven't told us the model of TV, but you may have a few options -
UPNP - sortof easy to use media networking - if you can enable that on your computer, the TV should be able to see music, photos and movies on your computer - this might be what you're using, but something is going wrong. Do any of the files or folders have big long names or strange characters in them?
Copy the photos onto a USB memory stick, and plug them into the TV - maybe that's a bit old fashioned, but it should work!
Your Sony TV might have a screen mirroring feature, usually used with tablets or phones, I've used it on a Sony TV - I think it's MiraCast, but Sony might have their own term for it.
If you can get software for the computer to use it, you would then simply see your computer's screen on your TV, and can browse the photos that way.

TV is Sony Bravia KDL-42W705B. Almillar, thanks for your suggestions but to be honest it will be simpler just to use the blu-ray player! I thought there might be an easy fix using the tv/pc but this does not seem to be the case.

Using a usb stick does work (and worked on our old tv) but had hoped to use the smart tv technology to miss out this step.

Have a look here under Network Connectivity:

Screen mirroring is the feature I was talking about, to simply get your computer's picture on the TV, without wires.
It also supports DNLA, and with WiFi, you should be able to browse what's on the computer.
Ironically, it might be easier to share this stuff from a tablet or smartphone.

Thanks again almillar. I have got my tablet to 'speak' to the tv and I can operate You tube on the tv via the tablet. Will try and find time to have a further play and experiment.

You may need a server program such as Twonky. I use this with a Samsung smart TV and it works perfectly on photos, videos & music.
