Car Parking Charge 'MET Parking services' legitimate?

Evening everyone,
I have read a number of posts regarding these guys, the rules have changed as I've read of the sticky for the topic, however I'd like little reassurance and help with my specific situation if possible please.
i have received a parking charge notice from the 'MET Parking services ltd' (MP45513050) saying that i have overstayed in a car park 'for a longer period than allowed and in accordance with the contract that was agreed to upon entering...' and they have a photo of the car)
I have checked the website ownership is under 'Chipside Ltd' in Wiltshire + when i do a domain ownership check of the website the registrant says 'Mark griffiths, UK individual' - although this could be due to poor records.....with a London address…not sure if this is a real legitimate company authorised to give out parking fines.
In older posts recommendations were to rip this ticket up and forget about It but I am afraid to do so.
In order posts I am advised not to appeal, what should my first step be now?
Thank you for any help, like others with these sorts of fines I am terrified of having action taken against me.
I'd be very, very grateful for any help with this.
Kind regards,
Janet

janet, its not a "fine" , nobody apart from the legal courts can fine you
its an invoice from a private company
as its in england, the rules changed over 2 years ago, in oct 2012
so you appeal it (DO NOT IGNORE IT)
if this was a windscreen ticket, you wait for the postal NTK , then appeal it
if this is the postal NTK, send the template letter as your appeal0 -

In order posts I am advised not to appeal, what should my first step be now?PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).

Hi Redx and coupon, thank yu for the information - you were actually 2 of the people that helped my colleague so thank you for getting in touch.
this fine was posted and it was a fine for over staying in a zone. so if i understand correctly, i do appeal this, and which template do i use, there is multiple on the newbies thread section.
thank you in advance i will check these more frequently.
kind regards,

Repeat after me ....... it is not a fine , it is not a fine , it is not a fine .....
:-)
Just pick whichever template you think if closest to your case, please remember that the appeal will in all likelihood fail ( some PPC's are starting to fold upon seeing a forum template)
you are after a POPLA code to get this one squashed,
After picking a template do not alter it much and do not 'out' your self by say 'I' did this etc ....... post it up here before you send it if you wish
