12 year old bank loan still effecting me?

12 years ago my (now) ex-partner wanted a loan (£1800) to get out of his overdraft after leaving the RAF, the bank (Lloyds tsb) refused him but said the I was able to get the loan for him. I did not want the loan in my name as I had a 3 year old son, 1 month old daughter and no job, but I was 'pestered' into agreeing by both my ex and the bank. The loan was suppose to go into my ex's name 5 months later after his credit improved but we 'surprisingly' split up just before that happened.
I refused to pay the loan, the main reason being I still did not have a job, I didnt recieve any money from him and why should I have to pay the money back because he decided to blow it on god know what in the raf, he definately did not spend it on me and the children!
Between 2003-2008 I had many calls from different debt agencies (me telling them the story and them passing it straight back to the bank) Lloyds closing my bank account and a few rude calls from an arrogant solicitors it all stopped and I have not herd anything since.
I opened a basic account with Natwest in 2008 and thougth no more of it, until the end of last year when I looked at upgrading my account, I had a meeting with my bank manager, went through my credit file (which has no mention of my Lloyds bank loan) but I was unsuccessful, basically my bank manager told me I will NEVER get a better account than a basic until I pay of the loan
I even tried Barclays but again only a basic account is available to me.
I do find this extremely frustrating, I understand the 'loan' was/is in my name but surley there is some kind of help out there for people who were in my situation?

The loan was in your name so not really a lot you can do about that now.
When did you make the last payment on the loan ?
Have you looked at your credit reports ? If not get the free report from noddle and the £2 statutory report from Equifax and Experian to see what shows up, this loan should not be affecting you now so there may be something else - looking at your reports will show where the problem is and then you can look at what you can do about it. http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/loans/check-free-credit-report0
