Hi, I've just joined the MSE Cheap Energy Club as we are due to complete on a house in the next couple of weeks. As we haven't lived in this country for a few years I don't have a current supplier - can I get round this when filling out the form?

TIA for your help.

    Hi MrsJaw

I've added below some information below which I think should help you with this.

When you first move in the current supplier will provide your energy, although you can switch as soon as you become responsible for the property.

You'll initially be on the existing supplier's standard tariff. If you want to get an idea of what tariffs are available before you move in, you can get an up-to-date comparison through Cheap Energy Club. Just don't submit the switch until you're responsible for the property.

    On the day you move…

Take a meter reading as soon as you move in and send it to the current supplier. This will ensure that your opening bill in the property is accurate.

    Once you’ve unpacked the boxes…

If you haven't already, now's the time to see if you can get a better deal. If you're a first time buyer, or you're unsure of how much your usage might be it is worth asking the property seller to get an idea of their bills. Alternatively you could use the estimator on the Cheap Energy Club site, you'll be able to input your answers to a few questions which will help to calculate your expected usage.

    I hope this helps!

When you say 'switched' do you mean you have applied to switch? If your switch has gone through, then your old supplier will know. If it hasn't then they will soon find out! In either case there is no need to tell your existing supplier what you are doing. The switch is 'managed' by your new supplier. The only thing that you need to check is that the readings on your final bill match those on your opening bill.

I am switching at the moment through MSE. The process started on the 11th. I heard from the new supplier on the 13th. My new online account was set up on Sunday, and I got 'we hear that you are switching' e-mail from my existing supplier yesterday. All being well, the switch goes through next week.

Thanks Dan L for your detailed reply, the house has been empty for 3 years so I don't know if the previous suppliers are still 'live' as it were. I will ask our solicitor to ask the vendors (family of a gent who has sadly been in a home) if they have that information.

I will read the meters as soon as we get the keys - just trying to think ahead on all the jobs that have to be done and get as much as I can sorted out beforehand!

    Many thanks.

Sure - just select 'don't know - we'll estimate for you' when you're prompted to enter your usage details.
