Selling Barclays Shares

My 86 y/o Mum has 232 Barclays shares from years ago when they bought The Woolwich.
Can anyone recommend the best way to sell them...The brokers for Barclays online want to charge £55 ...over 25% of the value !!

If they are certificated, she can transfer them for free to you or someone who has a share dealing account using a Crest transfer form. You can then send them to your share dealing service and ask them to be added to your account from where you could sell them online for £6 - £13 depending on which service you use. If you don't have a share dealing account and only the share certificate then it is expensive but try asking in your own bank how much they would charge; should be around £25 - £30.

You could use someone like X-O.co.uk share dealing services (£5.95 per trade) for a cheap method of selling the shares.

Open a Share Dealing account with X-O.co.uk (free to open and no annual account charges) then transfer the shares in to your account and sell them for £5.95 per share holding.

And if you have a certificate for the shares:

How do I transfer in stock that I hold in the form of certificates?

You can transfer the shares held with a certificate into Barclays Sharestore paperless holding service. The transfer into Sharestore is free, and then there's a fixed fee for selling of £10 for an online sale, or a minimum charge of £15 for a telephone sale - which would apply in your case, as the value of 232 shares at the moment is £557.50 .

If you google Barclays investor relations and go to the webpage, hover over the shareholder information link, and click on the frequently asked questions link, you will find that the fourth question down deals with how to buy and sell shares.

When you've read that answer then the answer to the question above tells you all about about Barclays Sharestore. The transfer form can be downloaded and printed.

    Hope this helps.
