Disabled Facilities Grant

Hi I need some advice I had a bathroom made under a disabled facilities grant 1 year ago. what happened last month is that we had water dripping from the hallway downstairs and the bathroom is right above it so I called the company that made it and told them the situation they arranged for one of there guys to come out to have a look at it and punched a big hole in the ceiling with a drill all of the gooey plaster and water dropped onto my carpet it was a leaking central heating pipe this guy phoned his manager the company owner and he said well its not coming from the toilet as we thought but a leaking central heating pipe is nothing to do with us. I then called a local plumber to come out and fix the problem what he found was that that the copper pipe was not leaking due to rust or corrosion in fact there was a tiny hole in the pipe and charged me £150 this is the cause of the company made the bathroom and ripped out the floor boards and then nailed them back in place and the ply wood which they put in all of the bathroom they hit the pipe with a nail which pierced the pipe and over the year it has corroded and water started leaking.

I told the company and the owner come out i showed him the copper pipe with the hole in it which i have as evidence and said we will send you out a check for £150 in the post and arrange for a plasterer to come out and have a look. The plasterer come out last Thursday and said the whole ceiling has to come down he cant just bodge the area which is open and left saying the company will phone you.

I today received a phone call from the company manager saying that i would like to say to you that there is not hard evidence that it was done by us and its been a year it could be that the nail was there from the beginning i said to him that i have been in my house for 9 years and have never had a leak and you make my bathroom and a year later this happens he said i want to offer you £150 for what you paid the plumber and I will pay £150 to get the ceiling sorted out your self which I am disappointed with.

So the ceiling is going to have to be hacked off plaster boarded and then skimmed my wallpaper is going to get ruined and i have to get the carpet cleaned my self £150 is not enough.


I phoned Care And Repair the people the local council instructed to handle everything during the bathroom build and money they said we have nothing to do with it it between you and them which has pead me off the company was paid £5600 to do the bathroom and this is the service i get. someone please help what should i do.

No matter what you think, you will never know how the hole in the pipe was caused. You may believe it was the bathroom company, but the manager is right in saying that the hole in the pipe could habe been there for years and caused by the original builder. It could just be coincidence that the leak showed itself a while after the floor was relaid.

I would put it through your buildings insurers Nd let them deL with it. If they feel that there is a case to answer, they will go after the installers.
