    Economy10 from Heatwise

Have also had contact with Eon re demise of Heatwise.

Sorry - again being a little bit confused here - but unsure E-On help desk staff understand question

Customer adviser seems also a little confused as to whether or not Economy 10 meter does in fact provide separate timed feed to heating / hot water.

As the tel-econ operator explained it to me - but seemed obvious didn't really understand my point - and may have been confusing the normal "single" meter operation for E7 etc - there will no longer be a seperate timed feed for the heating / hot water.

The implication of this being would have to fit my own timers to avoid them using peak rate electric.

Cannot believe this is correct - but clear operator had no basic wiring / electrical background - so did not push.

A couple of years ago my meter was upgraded from older digital to a new modern single unit "Heatwise" - including optional boost - circuit - so one box - multiple feeds - including switched feed for heating (storage heater) and water immersion heater.

Currently as I understand it - my system works as follows

One physical meter but for historic reasons sort of treated in billing as two, and so it reads out data for five tariffs.

In terms of billing think this works out as

    Standard "Meter"
1 Normal Circuit - Daytime - normal electrics
    2 Night ( E7 ) - normal electrics

    Heatwise "Meter"
3 Boost circuit - water heater feed only
4 Day / Evening - water and storage
5 Night - water and storage

Internal house wiring has one physical - but no doubt split internally - consumer unit - with separate sections ( and assume feeds ) for normal house circuits (ring main, lights etc), one for storage heaters and one for water heater

Now - like my neighbors - being told this will need to be replaced - most likely by new Economy10 tariff - but cannot believe as per operator info above.

I understand will loose the boost ( I never use anyway) - and that meters now use fixed time ( not even BST / GMT switched, rather than current remote ) but cannot believe will loose the timed separate output feed

Also understand that even if have two feeds - rather than having four tariffs - will get only two.

Can you confirm two new tariffs

1 Normal Circuits only - so excluding heaters / hot water - peak rates
2 Economy 10 tariff - all circuits during 10 hour window - so normal circuits, as well as hot water and storage heater

Actually seen a photo of a new Economy 10 install - and this has three output wires - one neutral and two live - so would hope this is "normal" and "switched timed live".

Can you confirm will still have separate feeds - normal and switched timed live ?

Can you confirm will not need to modify internal wiring to keep heating / water isolated from peak rate?

Morning Scot_39 and welcome to the Forums.

I'm sorry the advisor you spoke to wasn't too clear. I'll do my best to fill in the blanks. As you know and as per my earlier posts, Heatwise meters are being phased out and customers can choose between Economy 10, Economy 7 or single rate as a replacement. It's free whatever you go for.

The nearest to Heatwise is Economy 10. Both types are designed mainly for all electric properties with storage heaters and electric water immersion heaters. Both give customers 10 hours of cheaper off peak electricity in each 24 hour period. This is split over three periods in the afternoon, evening and at night. The actual hours the off peak rates are active depend on the region and make of meter. Like Heatwise, we've only the one tariff available for Economy 10 meters.

To work, both meters need to be wired into the heating/water heating circuits at individual properties. Unless manually overridden, this lets the meter automatically turn the heating on/off to take advantage of the off peak periods.

Where they differ is that your Heatwise meter records usage on 5 registers. Two record usage going through the dedicated heating/hot water circuits during the off peak times. Two more register all other usage including any for heating/hot water used outside of the off peak times. As you've Economy 7, this includes 7 hours at night where all usage is charged at off peak rates. The final register is for the Boost facility if extra hot water is needed.

The new Economy 10 meters have only two registers - peak and off peak. This means all electricity used during the 10 off peak hours is recorded on the one register. Unlike Heatwise, there's no distinction between heating and other usage. Here, all electricity used during the off peak times is charged at the lower prices regardless. There's no Boost facility on these meters though.

To answer your specific questions. With the new Economy 10 meters, all electricity used during the off peak times will be recorded on the off peak register and charged at the lower rate. Electricity used outside of these times will be recorded on the peak register and charged at the higher prices.

An Economy 10 meter will be wired into your dedicated heating circuits in a similar way to the current Heatwise set up. Unless manually overridden, this will turn the heating on and off as now.

Hope this makes things a bit clearer Scot_39. Let me know if you need any more information as happy to help. Not sure who you called but, if you've received a letter about the end of Heatwise, the number included should've put you in touch with a team specifically trained on these meter exchanges. They should've been able to give you chapter and verse. They'll also be able to book an appointment if you wish.
