Stick to the independent next time!
The above quote is wrong
Only after you have checked ALL prices and get the best deal.National chains have always been the best deal for me.0 -
Presumably the reason the big chain does it is so they can avoid responsibility if it goes wrong.
doubt thats the reason. It just means they don't have to employ the staff.
It also gives work to local people.

A single ( even if its a warehouse) is unlikely to generate enough business to keep a team busy. Even a big carpet takes very little time to install
My last carpet fitter said he worked for John Lewis and Carpet Right. He charged the same price for both.0 -
In my experience, you always pay the fitter in cash on the day - and I've been having carpets fitted off and on for 30+ years!!
The shop has sub-contracted the fitter, so if there are any problems, talk to the shop. I've certainly never had an issue with this - I've not had many problems, but when there's been a problem, it's always been sorted without any great difficulty. No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0 -

That would be the reason for using subcontractors rather than staff. I wasn't refering to that. I was refering to the reason for paying the fitters separately in cash. I can't see why else the chain would do that, other than to avoid potential hassle when things go wrong. Otherwise, why don't they just add the fitting to the sale and allow customers to pay for it all together? (As has been my experience with independents)0 -
This is stated on the SCS sofa/carpet chain website:Fitting charges are payable directly to the fitter in cash on the day of installation and the contract for the installation is between you and your carpet fitter0

Why don't you just ask in the shop? Say 'Who do I need to talk to if I'm not happy with the fitting?'No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0

Every time I've had a carpet fitted I've paid the fitter on the day - this is standard as far as I know.0

Not for us.
We had carpet fitted not long ago. Went to every carpet shop including the chains and a small independent shop beat our lowest quote.
Fitting was included.
They were brilliant. They also said they would remove old carpet take it away and move furniture with no charge, although we did this ourselves to save time.
They also rang us the next day to make sure we were happy with it and trusted us to pay the balance when we went into the shop the day after.0 -

Our experience is the opposite to this, we have never paid the fitter.
If you are going to do this you might as well order the carpet online and get your own fitter in, works out cheaper but more difficult if you then have any problems.0
