Issue with neglected Natiowide joint account

I held a joint account with my partner at the time. She was able to access this account through using existing Nationwide internet banking login details, and we opted for paperless billing.
When the relationship ended and she moved out (January 2014), she informed me that the overdraft had been cleared, and the account had been frozen at her request. She subsequently sent me documentation that removed her from the account, signing it over to me. I signed and returned the forms, and changed address at the end of 2014.
Recently, I have received automated messages from Nationwide informing me that the account is too far overdrawn and requires immediate payments. I haven't made any payment yet.
I accept a degree of responsibility for not checking the account when my circumstances changed. However, I feel that it's a little unfair to have accrued charges and interest for an account that was effectively in limbo, I received no information of, and have not accessed (nor been able to access) in over a year.
Do I have a leg to stand on, or should I just pay up and shut up?
Thanks guys!
