DFS Scotch guard protection - is it worth it?

We are looking at buying a new sofa from DFS and having children we feel protecting the sofa would be a worth while idea however it's £175 to have it done but you can buy the cans yourself for approximately £10. Can anyone advise if they have done this or do you think its worth paying the £175? Thanks

Is this £175 from DFS? Why not shop around for someone else to do it. Or DIY as you suggest, though it will take more than one can to do it properly I suspect. We had our sofas done when they were new, and yes it made a lot of difference with two young children spilling stuff......... Not to mention the adults and their coffee and wine and so on.

I am an ex carpet cleaner.

"Protection" is like insurance, it costs, but if you don't have it and something happens it costs even more.

When I was working I would have quoted about £15 per seat to protect a suite, less if I was cleaning it at the same time. Scotchguard is a (Very expensive) brand name!

When looking at carpet protection (already done before fitting) treatment leaflets, I noticed that you have to contract to have your carpets professionally cleaned (rather like paying for a boiler service to maintain your boiler's warranty).

Would this be the case with upholstery ?

I would go for leather, as it lasts longer and is much more robust. Spills wipe off provided that you don't have the very expensive aniline leather, which is not waterproofed.
  • For carpets if I was not cleaning them first, I was trained to mist an acid rinse on to them, and work it in before applying the protector. If you don't then the protector tends to form beads, pinhead size, rather than covering all of the fibres.
