my son didnt speak until he was almost 2 and at that point we had had hearing assesments before embarking on speech therapy soon after....at that stage he only had about 4 or 5 conventional words he used frequently
Nothing untoward was ever discovered and once he went to nursery his speech started to flow much better and he seemed to go straight into longer and more complicated words......
Sometimes I think back and wonder if we allowed him to get away without talking by doing or assuming too much of what he said...or even that we did infact worry unnecessarily,as he went on to talk perfectly!
It is always an idea to have a hearing test as it can help to rule out any speech issues, but its also worth remembering that children do develop at different stages so what one finds easy the next one might not.
We did get some tips from the speech therapist in order to bring words out clearer and were able to get several word association type games and flash cards which really did help...although its really important to make the most of everyday situations and chat as much as you can with them to encorage interaction in a way that its not a chore but part of everyday life.frugal October...£41.82 of £40 food shopping spend for the 2 of us!

I'll await the post in 3 to 4 years time when you want to know how to make her sit down and be quiet for about 30 seconds

I think every new parent worries about such and such child can recite the bible and they are only 3, so and so's child can do her 12 times table at the age of 2 and so on and so forth.
So long as they are happy and progressing i wouldn't worry about it too much, even though i know we all do with the first one.0 -
My daughter didn't say a lot before two then it all suddenly came.0

Yep my daughter does not stop talking now, the nursery have even commented on her use of complex sentences :rotfl:.0

Hi!
OP sounds like something I would have wrote about my DS. Even when he was 2 he was not saying much but undertstood everything that was asked of him. I was worrying there was something wrong but he got to about 2 and half and suddenly you couldn't shut him up! He now talks away and talks in sentences, he's 3 on Thursday.
Although milestones are set we have to remember that they are still individuals, some will talk early, some will talk later.
My DS was also a late walker, didn't start until he was about 15 months but once he started he was up and off, no stumbling about.
It's natural to worry but relax and enjoy your DD

My daughter was saying 200 words by that age. My friend's son was saying 3.
By 5 years old, you couldn't shut either of them up. :rotfl:
My daughter did not walk til 16-17 months, my friend's son walked at 12 months. She beat him at running over when they were 5.
15+ years on, they got the same grades in their A levels and they are both at 2 of the best universities in the country.
Children come on in different ways, and it makes not a jot of difference to their intelligence how many words they are saying by 2, or how many steps they have taken!
He obviously has a great family and a parent who cares, so he'll be fine!
Proud to have lost over 3 stone (45 pounds,) in the past year! :j Now a size 14!
You're not singing anymore........ You're not singing any-more!

There is a huge range of toddler speech levels. DD said her first word at ten months ( cat) and didn't ever shut up.
DS only babbled until he was nearly two, then began talking in sentences. We are looking after grandsons now. Number 2 has suddenly taken off with speech at 18 months, although diction varies enormously.
I wouldn't worry about her.Member #14 of SKI-ers club
Words, words, they're all we have to go by!.
(Pity they are mangled by this autocorrect!)0 -
Kids often focus on learning one thing at once. The two "big" things they have to learn are how to walk and how to talk - my son focused on the walking while my daughter focused on the talking.
Unless you have any serious concerns about your child's development I wouldn't worry about this yet - they sound perfectly normal to me.0
