Boiler condemned and in an IVA ... what next?

Options
I'm hoping that someone can give me some advice please? We had our ancient boiler serviced yesterday (fitted in 1969!), and told that we need to save for a new boiler - fast. The guy who serviced it is a trusted family friend fully qualified gas engineer, so when he says it needs to be replaced, it needs to be replaced! He's managed to keep this thing going for years but it's had it's day and needs to go before it kills us.

He has said that we really need to get this done by the summer, as its getting dangerous, but should last a few more months. We've got a new carbon monoxide alarm just in case.

As we will not be able to get any credit and have no family or friends we can ask to lend us the money to replace it, I was wondering about these boiler rental schemes? The one I've heard of was "Hassle-free boilers". Has anyone else experienced this kind of thing? I wouldn't have thought that any of the gas suppliers would be prepared to extend finance to someone like us.

I have already considered the 3 month payment break, but that won't even make a dent into the cost of replacing the boiler. We did have £400 saved, but had to spend this on essential car repairs. So, back to square one for the 'rainy day' fund.

Any advice gratefully received!

  • In addition to your thoughts, you could also consider the following:

    Speak to your iva firm to negotiate a longer break (you will need to let them know about your increased outgoings anyway;
    Your local authority might have some scheme going;
    Your energy provider might install one, and allow you to spread the cost over a number of months (again, check with your iva firm to allow the additional outgoings); or as a last resort, and if the boiler gets condemned:

    Use your immersion heater for hot water, and portable heaters etc. whilst you save for a replacement.

    A far from ideal predicament, especially at this time of year. Sincerely hope you find a workable solution. Let us know how you get on.

    I am curious as to the make and model of this boiler which has served you so well...
    Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

    Thank you UpToMyNeckInIt - well worth investigating!

    And C_Mababejive - I couldn't tell you the model, only that it's a floor standing one, in the corner of the kitchen but I can tell you it's a Potterton. I'm told that they haven't changed much over the years.
