True, but you said there is 'nothing' to replace them. There is, and it does a whole lot more than any incandescent offers.

Not only can I change the brightness of mine, I can change the colour temperature, I can change the hue, I can make it come on and go off as I enter and exit the room, I can make it simulate a TV while I'm away from the house, I can make it gently increase in brightness like a sunrise for my alarm, I can set timers, I can simulate candle light, I can make it strobe, I can make it visualise my music, I can make it blink a specific colour when I receive a text/email/facebook notification, I can set profiles for any type of light I require, and I can turn it on or off from anywhere in the world. I'm not sure of the usefulness of that last one.

I wouldn't call it MSE, but it is a fun little gadget. ;):D

    ... and all I have is a cheap, fit-for-purpose, item. :)

As I said before, it wasn't bought to be MSE, It was bought for fun. :D

Anyone can take MSE to the extreme, the point is to save money where you want so that you can spend money where you want.

    Hi folks,

I am starting to hear lots of good things about LED lighting and wondering is it a good idea to replace every light socket in house with an LED light.

I wonder if anyone on here has done just that, and are you satisfied with the results, as I understand it can be a bit of a minefield to select the right LED temperature etc?

I have ten light sockets in all so would really appreciate it , if anyone had LED lighting as to the cost per average light for room and also the installation cost?

Or would it be better to wait a year or so and let prices come down?

    Many thanks for any advice.

    John

Prices for quality products are not coming down very quickly as the cost of quality raw materials, power supplies, LED Chips and drivers are not coming down. The cheap crap that is on sale everywhere is getting cheaper quite quickly for obvious reasons.

No it would not be a good idea to change very light in your home to LED, you should only really change the lamps that have heavy usage where investing in LED will be worth it. No point in putting a £10 LED Bulb in a downstairs bathroom that gets a total usage of a few hours a week.

Minefield is an understatement. I've been in the industry for over a decade and the manipulation and lies that get spouted about LED products still shocks me today. There are so many tricks used to convince you to part with your cash. The big one at the moment is to offer big discounts, like 20%, 25% and 30% off - often these discounts are nothing more than a marketing strategy and even when you use the discount you end up vastly over paying for a very cheap product. The discount is just used to give you the perception you are getting a good deal. Supermarkets having been using this tactic on wine for donkeys years.

Some companies are offering these big discounts at a rate of 2 a week. Don't fall for it, check the companies twitter feed, Facebook etc to see how often they issue these discount as then you can tell if they are purely marketing nonsense.

Look out for companies who advertise 5 year warranties as often these are just 2 year warranties, unless of course you have filled out the extended warranty form they haven't told you about thats buried deep in their website in time :(

It's also important to note that virtually no (there are exceptions) LED Bulbs and Spots that are on sale in the UK are genuine, perfect or true replacements for halogen and incandescent.

If the product doesn't have a colour temp of 2700k matched with CRI of 95 or above, then it's absolutely not going to give you the same quality of light.

Good luck, i feel for anyone who has decided to switch to LED Lighting as the vast majority of people are over paying for products that quite simple are not good enough supplied by companies who don't know their xxxx from their elbow.

I would recommend looking at the LEDs supplied by http://well-lit.co.uk/

If you care about the quality of your light and longevity of your LEDS then they have the knowledge and products.

If you dont care then buy the cheapest and learn from experience.

    I know elstimpo.

I've done my research and find that your products and information are excellent.

I'm afraid not everyone has the time or skills to always get an acceptable standard of product, so thought I would share my unbiased experience.

I'm working on a document that exposes all the tricks companies use to get people to buy their products and exactly what consumers need to look for with regards to LED Lighting.

Big one is warranties and the amount of things companies can do to not honour them. :)
