Lambda sensor would be my bet, the symptoms often lead people to assume the cat has gone or become blocked.

    Hi vicky.
I have had my mk1 1600 since new, I'm not a pro mechanic neither!

But even though ihad solved one problem by cleaning the crankshaft sensor & solving the problem.

2 months later , it was playing up again & I said it will not be that sensor as it had been cleaned & returned.

Anyway I took it out , cleaned it again , put it back in & hey presto , it was running good again.

I now have a spare for next time .

well car running 90% better today after draining fuel and putting in premium in, I just put half a tank in bout 10 miles before it started playing up so maybe it was bad batch of fuel. or was a part what bf changed and as has been sat for a month was going of, has been some bad batches round here lately

You need a multimeter at the very least and access to technical data. Most components can be tested without replacing them. An ohmmeter for example will be a start with the lambda sensor.
Compression test, buy the tool, remove plugs, disable somehow fuel system (fuse will do it), etc..

If compression okay see if he can get a proper scanner to read live data (not a crAppy code reader) and more importantly understand what it means. Just cos there's a figure doesn't mean it's good.

Although sounds like he's going at it wrong, really needs a proper diagnostics session with a mechanic.

    A month you say?
Might have been water in the fuel, modern fuel has bioethanol added, its EU law. Bioethanol is hygroscopic, it readily combines with moisture in the air, the more air in the tank the faster the ethanol separates, basically fuel goes off. 1 month is about all you can expect.
The effect depends on the car, but anything from loss of power to rough running to complete fuel line blockage.

OK darkmatter, and all your other mental entities, your work is done here. Go and annoy another forum before you entirely trash this one.
  • OP, can I also suggest when you last changed the oil?

The oil in my Yaris was well over due (nearly 2 years) and it had cheap semi-synthetic oil. When I had the oil change, I saw the condition of the old oil, completely black and smelt heavily of petrol! It did a lot of short trips in the cold so was running rich for the most part, which explains that!

Had it changed using Fuchs 5W30 XTL GT1 Pro and I can genuinely feel the difference! A much smoother engine and the mpg has gone up by 3-5mpg! Happy days!
