And what a different thread that would have been. "Took my dog to the vets who had swallowed a screw but before they did anything, they sat down and talked me through costs - however that delay meant there was irreparable damage and Fido had to be put to sleep/passed away - can I sue?"
It wasnt life or death though.
If it was, it takes like 10 seconds to tel me cost, no?
And they had me waiting for a while before even taking him anyway.
I am gonna speak to them tomorrow anyway, this thread is draining me.
Especially people jumping on the car anaology trying to pick it apart and failing.0 -

They also say that Veterinary surgeons should include any estimated charge or fee on a consent form
I think when I first registered with a vet I got given a pack which probably contained a lot of the information you quote. But this was on a first visit for injections quite a different situation from turning up out of hours in an emergency!
Did you know once you got your dog you should have registered with a vet and seen them to give the dog a check up to make sure everything was ok, if that was done I have sure you would have been given this info and they would have spend more time explaining things to you and for you to ask questions.0 -
Maybe if I knew it was £200+ I would have had a choice whether to proceed or not.0

I imagine it is draining because you are wrong. How did you know it was life or death until they had done the investigations?
As I said earlier, i am not sure what you were wanting or expecting from this thread.0 -

You said it was £130, no?
Is it not worth the cost for peace of mind that your dog is ok? You said it isn't because you haven't got the money.
I agree with your example of the car in the sense that you would be right to feel peed off if they carried out work without your consent.
Maybe they just made a genuine mistake then and thought someone had explained the costs. Even so, you would still be paying them.0 -

Oh and am only saying they may have made a mistake after you posted the info about them making you wait for ages, something I have either missed or you haven't mentioned before.0 -

Well if they had found a screw on the x-ray and carried on with doing an operation and charging you for that before speaking to you, you certainly would be within your rights to complain.
But you took your dog in wanting an investigation as you said it swallowed a screw, that is what they did.
I do think the receptionist could have been clearer in what she told you and you have every right to point that out but going in all guns blazing and threatening trading standards is not going to help you.0 -

And what would you have done/said if you they had said £200 to start with? Turned round and said "Oh sorry Mr. Vet but £200 is much too expensive to see if my dog is fatally ill" and then left? How many vets would you have taken her too before finding one that you thought reasonable while all the time they could have been getting worst by the minute that's not only cruel that's heartless
Yes vets charge a lot one charged me £2500 to save my cats life but I paid it because her life means more to me than money plus it's what I signed up for by being her owner. The promise that if she was ill I would get her the help she needed no matter what.
Every time one of my animals has need emergency treatment and there has been quite a few times I have know it wasn't going to be cheap but the relief of know I'll have my pet another day has been worth itFirst Date 08/11/2008, Moved In Together 01/06/2009, Engaged 01/01/10, Wedding Day 27/04/2013, Baby Moshie due 29/06/2019 :T0 -
I think the OP is probably more annoyed with himself.
He didn't realise how expensive vets were, if he had know he would have spent more time looking for the screw to make sure if the dog had swallowed it or not. If most pet owners are honest this is what they would have done (especially as it was out of hours), checked the dog seemed ok and then spent as much time as possible looking and trying to make sure they had swallowed it before going to the vet.
Once at the vets, the vet can only go on what they have been told ie the dog swallowed a screw, it is not their job to question how long the said owners spent trying to be certain it this was the case.0 -
How much did you think it would cost to make him sick? Bet it would have cost about the same. Cost of tablets, supervision, time etc.
We paid over £100 when our pomeranian hurt her foot out of hours. No treatment needed just a cone for 24 hours. Would have paid £1000 to know she was ok0
