Renters have been made to feel like third class citizens for too long.

They are angry and change is coming.

I suspect that private renters and their concerned parents are a large enough group that they have some political clout.

Apparently there are 9,000,000 people renting privately in the UK. That's roughly the same number as pensioners.

Fundamentally, the problem the UK housing market has is too few houses. A problem of a shortage isn't going to be solved by rent controls.

Let builders build and prices will come down to more affordable levels.
Just renewing my buildings insurance, the suggested rebuild cost is one third the market value. There is land that could be built on within a few hundred metres. If that doesn't highlight that the problem is a lack of housing due to restrictions on building I don't know what would....
    I think....

Ons 2013 - Of the 23.4 million homes (or households) in England and Wales on census day in March 2011, 15 million (64 per cent) were owner occupied and 8.3 million (36 per cent) were rented.

How much change have we really seen?

    8.43 percent.
If you think of it as 'us' verses 'them', then it's probably your side that are the villains.

why do you hate housing associations so much?

You need to split that statistic by distinguishing between renting from a private landlord and renting from a council or housing association. Many of the disadvantages of private renting don't apply to social housing, and it's the specific problems of private renting that Generation Rent etc are campaigning about.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Take a more European view then , that renting is ok and perfectly normal , and be less angry about it..?

Also you don't need to save for building repairs/maintenance/re-modelling ....so there is always a positive to things if you look hard enough.

Being angry ain't going to change it.

I couldn't care too much if house prices rise or fall, my house is my home first, and I understand frustrations of trying to get onto the ladder.....but maybe things are changing. Maybe our country will become more a renter than owner place for a while.
Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.

I don't think Generation Rent will be taking a more European view of renting unless they get more European policies on the relative rights of landlords and tenants.

True, when I rented my main concern was the longevity of the term. Had I had more settled accommodation for years lease, I would have felt more secure. This is where I think things do need to change.

Also for tenants to respect properties they rent more, and if don't do that for it to be easier to evict them.

However, if leases were longer and people felt they had a future somewhere, they may be more inclined to look after the property, make improvements themselves etc....then everyone is the winner.

Just a thought.....i am probably being quite naive about it maybe.

    ....

What "European view"? I've said it before, and I'll say it again, the UK level of owner occupied housing is below the EU average. Or has Romania suddenly moved out of Europe in recent times?
