Would like some help choosing a laptop please.

Hi,

Would anyone be kind enough to help me to choose a suitable laptop please, I've been looking around for a while now and can't find one. Don't mind the price so much as long as it will last me well. I don't play many games, I like to have lots of windows and tabs open as well as 2 browsers so it needs to be good at multi-tasking.
I'd ideally like -

17" + touch screen
Dvd drive
6 GB + Memory
750 GB + Hard drive
Backlit keyboard
Card reader

Can't think of anything else at the minute, any suggestions please.
Thank you.

  • Other than browsing the net, what will you be using it for?

Will you be using it primarily at home, or will you be hauling it around Europe/the world?

I mainly just browse, read a few forums, shop, enter competitions.
Just for using at home and a few weekends away, don't mind the weight of it I just like a big screen.

Could anyone give their opinions on these 2 laptops please.
I like the second one but the latest reviews on it doesn't seem very good.
Are there any makes I should be looking at or avoiding.
    Thanks.

Out of those two, it's really a no brainer, would have to be the second one, due to the relatively small difference in price for a much better spec machine.

The problem is that you want a backlit keyboard, 17" screen laptop, which really mainly takes it into gaming machines, which are way over what you actually need, and obviously don't come cheap.

Have a look at MSI, Asus and Lenovo which are fairly reliable.

    Thanks for your reply Anne_Marie.
I do prefer the second one it was just some of the reviews putting me off.
I am having problems finding what I want.
I'll take a look at the makes you suggested thanks.

You are welcome, just hope that it helps you somewhat.
The problem is, that on forums like this, you really only get personal opinions. So, next poster might say what I have suggested is rubbish and to look at X, Y and Z, and rightly so.

As I said, with the two options that you gave, the second option with the i7 processor was the better, due to the little difference in price. In actual fact, you certainly won't need that processor, going by your needs, an i5 processor will be more than ample.

I like the Lenovo on the link above I don't think it has a back-lit keyboard though.
  • So sorry Matphil, looking at it again, you are right, no mention of backlit keyboard. I had been looking at the older Z710 on US site, which is no longer available, according to UK site, and had linked to wrong laptop. Sincere apologies.

No need to be sorry or apologise, I'm very grateful for your opinion.
I did like the Lenovo laptop as it looked as though it had separate left and right click buttons where as the Dell ones don't.
  • Have you looked on the Dell Outlet? Might save a bit of money if you do end up opting for the Dell, stocks change all the time.
