Can a dealer simply say he runs an auction house, sticker price is the reserve and get round it that way?

Yeah, I posed that thread in the Money Saving Arms as a bit of a joke really, I wanted to see if anyone would realise I was taking the mickey out of the posters in that section of the forum. They just answered my questions, rather than ask why I wanted to know.

    Strange bunch.

A fault though doesn't necessarily mean dealer has to fix it. If it could be attributed to fair wear and tear.

No. On the basis that he doesnt run an auction house.

Then its wear and tear, not a fault.

Having said that, i would have thought most things that happen to a 10+ year old car could probably be attributed to wear and tear.

Yeah wear and tear is one thing but the dealer saying that not paying the screen price means its bought as seen sounded wrong to me.

In my case the car was advertised at 2 prices. Full screen price or trade sale price. I knew exactly what i was buying and happy to buy under trade sale terms. But i didnt know that it was dodgy ground for the dealer.

How does a trader sell a cheaper car? Spares or repairs only?

A bona fide trader sells cars he can stand by and explains significant faults to interested buyers. He may even have a trade contact, a sweeper-up, who will buy it as is, where is, as a genuine trade-away. Everything else (most of the shrapnel) goes straight to auction where the driveway dealers can pick up a, "bargain".
