Rental Leaving Notice

Hello,
I'll explain the situation a little.
We live in Scotland. We currently rent a flat which originally started off on a 6 month lease but is now rolling month to month. We let our landlord know our intensions to leave the flat as we have found a new house. We gave him the one month's notice that he said was required on the 17th of January. He replied saying we need to give him one months notice on the 28th of January. He said because this is the day we pay the rent that's the day we need to give the month's notice.
Is this true? We can only give a month's notice on the day we pay the rent?
I thought a month's notice was a month's notice. Not a month's notice only on a certain date. It basically means he'll be getting two weeks rental income for nothing as he knows we're moving out.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks

What kind of tenancy do you have? Assured Tenancy or Short Assured Tenancy? What does your tenancy agreement says will happen at the end of the initial 6 months? Does it say your tenancy will just go from one month to the next or does it say nothing about it at all?
Edit: What date did your original tenancy start?0
