day before bag drop service.

Travelling from Gatwick North and noticed the online check-in and day before bag drop facility mentioned on the documents. Has anyone tried this as the idea of rolling up next day and going straight to security appeals ??

It's good of it's operating, but quite often you'll roll up at the airport the evening before to find all the desks closed and the DIY machines switched off.

  • Dont use the night before bag drop but online checkin and travelling only with hand luggage so going straight from the carpark to Security is something I do 3+ times per month on average.

You do need to ensure you are there early enough to drop your bags off that they havent closed

We always opt for evening check-in, ditch the bags and paperwork and seating is sorted, make's for a leisurely breakfast and a hassle free start to a long haul flight.

we always do this when we fly Virgin from Gatwick...we wouldn't do it any other way. It makes the day of departure so much more relaxed (and we live in London but still opt to do this and stay in a hotel at the airport the night before). I can't comment on any other airlines but have never had an issue with Virgin not having staff present during the twilight check-in hours.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

The whole twilight bag drop area at Gatwick North was deserted last summer, on more than one occasion, although it was around the security alert at the end July, perhaps that was why?

If you're staying at one of the on airport hotels the night before it's worth it, but if you're staying any further away I wouldn't make a special trip to do it

Don't forget that most airlines insist that all passengers are present ;)

Done it twice. Last time was at Gatwick North with Thomson in November.

Arrived by train at Gatwick South @ 1440.

By 1515 we'd got the shuttle-train to North Terminal, dropped our bags at the Thomson Desk [no queue], checked into North Terminal Premier Inn, and were in our very comfortable room.

    Flight was @ 0615.

Left the Premier Inn @ 0400, into the Terminal Building, waved at the people in the queue waiting to check-in, and went straight to Departures.

    Effortless.:)
