Hi, I am asking for help/advice on setting up a WiFi music streaming device, I want to connect the PC in out main room to the HiFi.
So far I have managed to set it up through the router, so that an Android phone and a PC in another room can access it and stream/play music using DLNA.
However the main PC that we want to use is a Windows 8.1 machine .... I have gone through the setting several time with no luck :-( If you right click on a music file the option to 'play to' is there but nothing happens. I have tried VCL & Windows media player ( both seem to claim DLNA compatibility) again no luck.
Microsoft have a few help pages on this but they are wrong/obsolete/crap
any one any suggestions for me to look at?
thanks

For this to work you need a device with its audio out plugged into the hi-fi to play the files. You can't play the files on the computer and have sound come out of the hi-fi over a network. The computer is just being used as a music storage system. The device playing the files sees this storage and streams the data over the network.
You need a network capable music playing box plugged into the Hi-Fi.0 -
Yes thanks for that ....... I presume you did not read all the above ? I have it working all ready via a windows 7 PC and a Android phone ..... just not Windows 8.1 .....

It should work exactly the same in Win7 and Win8. You don't use a play to command with either of them. You don't use Media Player or VLC on the machine where the music is to send the music somewhere else.
Make sure you have sharing turned on for the relevant folders. Make sure the device playing the music has been allowed in the media streaming options. Make sure sharing of the music library has been allowed. Make sure the music library location is correct in the library settings.0 -
I think we may have crossed wires here .....
To test this new device (a SoundMate) out I connected it via the WiFi / router, then accessed it on a android phone used a DLNA enabled music player and it worked (as in the music played over the home network onto my HiFi). I had problems trying the W8 PC so I tried an W7 PC with no probs, I selected a music file using windows explorer , right clicked and it played over the HiFi ....
As far as I know I have done every thing the same with the W8 PC , it even shows up (Soundmate) in devices, but either something is broken or I have missed something
