Oil fired central heating

Hi,

I am looking to rent a property (As per previous thread, the one I ideally wanted has now been taken off the market) but it states that it has oil fired central heating.

Could anyone give an indication as to what the cost of this is compared to gas? It's a 3 bed moderately sized, mid terraced property.

Thanks in advance.

As previously advised, check the oil forum.

Oil is a bit more expensive, though possibly not now as oil prices have dropped a lot in the last 6 months (58 ppl to around 35 ppl)

So many variables, insulation in the property, what the weather is like (last year was a mild winter here in the East), how effecient the boiler is, how often the heating is on and at what temperature and of course the volatile price of oil. Oh and how you heat your water - via the oil boiler or an immersion.

Last year we spent just over £1,000 on oil (4 bed detached) but it was a mild winter and I didn't have the house as warm as I would like. Keeping the house warmer this year but I have installed programmable TRV's so I can zone the heating.

Oil is a lot cheaper this year, last year we paid over £300 for 500 litres (about £330 if I remember correctly) today it would cost £176. 500 litres is the minimum you can buy I believe apart from top up cans.
  • Average of £2,444 a year over the last 9 years but that is for a big 4 bedroom house which wasn't very well insulated till last year and includes running an AGA 24 hours a day 365 days a year. Suspect the heating element is about half that so about £100 a month on average.

Oil at the moment is cheap - filled up earlier this month at Feb 2007 prices. Always either ring round a few suppliers or think about a buying consortium when you fill up.

We have oil central heating and also heat our domestic hot water via our oil boiler. We live in a detached 3 bedroomed/2 bathroom bungalow. We are retired and in the winter have our heating on from 6.30 am to 6.30 pm and our property is newish and well insulated. We keep our sitting room at 21c.

We use approximately 1000 litres a year.

We recently had our tank filled up with 500 litres and the cost was 32p per litre. As others have said the price has come down a lot recently. We used BoilerJuice for our last order and found their price the cheapest and it was very easy to order via the internet. We used to ring round suppliers, but recently they wouldn't/couldn't match BoilerJuice prices.
  • We had oil heating at the house we just sold in December. There was no mains gas in the village so no option for that. Obviously the price of oil has dropped considerably recently so it's a good idea to stock up.

The one thing I wasn't keen on was the *running out* aspect - you can't run out of gas, but in theory you can run out of oil - but we had a watchman gauge fitted that told you how much oil was in the tank so you knew when to restock ;)

Thank you for all your replies and the time taken. I am unsure as to whether I want to pay the extortionate up front fees for renting and then have to pay for oil on top of that!

I absolutely detest being cold so I fear I would use a ridiculous amount! I had a £500 bill for 3 month use of storage heaters, I can't go back to paying that sort of money!

    Thanks again!!
