AGA City 60

Hi, I'm considering an AGA City 60 but can't find any reviews or many comments about them.

It's smaller than the average AGA but appears to work on the same principal.

Anyone on here either got one or used one?
I'd be really grateful for any replies....not sure about the running costs of it either.
It's a turn on and off when your not using it type.

Thanks in advance ....

I imagine it is a great piece of kit, but it hasn't been out too long.

If I were in your shoes I would look at induction hobs/cookers.

Missus wanted an AGA and after a bit of persuasion I persuaded her to go for a Rangemaster 110 Induction Range (made by Aga).

The cost of the Aga 60 is quite dear!

The do have their disadvantages but what I like about them is the solidity of the construction. They are rock solid.

I would love one. We went to the launch day at a local Aga shop and it looked amazing. Don't think there will be many reviews as yet as its only relatively new, September 2014 I think it was launched.

I did ask about running costs, especially as it takes around 20-30 mins for the hotplate to warm up which seems a bit excessive when I only want to boil a pan of pasta for my tea. They seemed confident it would be cost effective but no one could tell me exactly how much energy it would use for that task so I could compare it to say a gas or induction hob.

Would like one but could never justify the £5k bill for a cooker. Going for an induction hob instead.

Thanks for the replies.....I'm not sure I can justify spending so much on a cooker....although I really fancy the AGA way of cooking!
  • I have one! Still playing with it, as it was only delivered a couple of weeks ago so I don't know yet how much it's going to cost to run.

The hotplate takes 8 minutes to heat up to simmering and 11 minutes to heat it to boiling but then it's much much faster than a regular hotplate. The ovens take an hour but again once they're hot they're brilliant.

Everything i've cooked so far has been really simple to do - in fact that was one of the reasons I bought it

It was expensive, but for me it solved so many problems (no space for a big range cooker but didn't want to go back to four tiny rings) it was worth it. Also I am NEVER moving house again <shudders at memory>>

    Hi

The City 60 is very new to the Aga range of cast iron cookers.

I think it fits a VERY small niche in the market. Without question if you have the space get a proper full sized Aga (1000mm wide). If I was being 'unkind' then actually I would say that the City 60 has been designed by someone that has no concept what so ever of how to cook! I say this because the whole principal of cooking on the top of the Aga is that you have 2 hob areas, one for boiling and one for simmering. So just having 1 hot plate that you can turn off, up or down is ridiculous because it will take forever to go from boiling to simmering. Also to have ovens that take 1 hour to heat up in this day and age is frankly astonishing!

I think if you can't fit in a proper full sized Aga and you must have one 600mm wide, then a Aga freestanding module with either a 4 burner gas hob or ceramic hob and 2 conventional ovens (that heat up much quicker) is a much better appliance, and then when you consider its nearly half the price at £2,750, its a no-brainer!

BTW Hintza - Aga don't make Rangemaster cookers, its actually more like the other way round! Rangemaster is the parent company that also owns in addition to Aga - Rayburn, Stanley, La Cornue, Falcon, Mercury and Fired Earth.

    CK.
  • I've got one, no problem useing the hotplate from boiling to simmering just move to the side while waiting just a just a couple of minutes when changeing the setting, and if the simmering setting is too low just turn to boiling for a few seconds now and again. I can do more on the hotplate than I can on 4 burners.
I sometimes use a large frying pan (32cm Wol) and it heats evenly all over, and makes no mess.

    Hi there Faustina,
Now that you've had your City60 a couple of months, are you able to estimate its running costs? Any hair-raising electricity bills? Even a rough idea would be helpful.
    Many thanks for your advice!

My recommendation is to get a built in oven and an induction hob. It will not only be much faster and more energy efficient, you will have up to date technology to hand.

Buying an Aga is the equivalent of a mid 90's mobile phone or one of those bakelite phone with clunky dials. It may be charming and characterful but its about as practical as a chocolate teapot.

  • Hi Faustina
A couple of years ago we looked into getting a Total Control Aga. They were a new concept at the time and a lot of reviews from owners said that when the oven were turned off water collected in the bottom. This was because cast iron is porous and absorbs moisture from the atmosphere. Have you had any such problems with yours?
