Windows 8.1 on new laptop

My new laptop runs Windows 8.1.

I've mastered most of the differences between 8.1 and XP (which my old PC runs on) but I cannot work out how to get instantly to the top (or bottom) of a page.

For example, on this MSE website, when I've read umpteen postings on a thread, on XP I can press Control + Home and get back to the top of the webpage instantly.

On 8.1, pressing Control + Home has no effect at all.

It's the same with Control + End.

I'm wearing out my scroll (arrow) keys! Help please! :)

Have you tried Control + Alt + Page down?
  • Hmm ... Ctrl-Home and Ctrl-End work fine for me in Windows 8.1.

Which browser are you using? Windows 8.1 has two versions of Internet Explorer - one which is the full-screen 'Metro' style version, and one which is the traditional Desktop style.

If you're using IE, then I would recommend using the Desktop version over the Metro version.

(If you don't know how, click on the 'Windows Flag' button at the bottom left of the screen to go to the Start Screen, then right-click on the Internet Explorer tile, and select 'Pin to Taskbar' if it isn't already on your Taskbar. Then run Internet Explorer from the Taskbar icon).

Or you can use an alternative browser such as Firefox/ Chrome etc.
  • Mine works just fine with Home and End, no Ctrl needed.

I'll second that. I never use Ctrl on either my desktop or laptop.

I have a new HP laptop with 8.1, and 'fn' + 'end' works fine for me.

  • Thanks to all for your efforts to help.

Gloomendoom, Control + Alt + Page Down simply scrolls (like pressing the Arrow Down key). It doesn't take me instantly to the end of the page.

Jivesinger, I usually use Chrome but occasionally IE. The problem's the same on both.

Big Graeme and RumRat, just pressing Home or End doesn't work either.

Any further suggestions would be gratefully received - this fault is the only thing I really hate about Windows 8.1, as it makes reading webpages soooo slow.

I don't think it's a W8.1 problem, probably a fault with your laptop. What make and model is it?
