    Good afternoon Elite. Just popping on with a question...not shopping related :eek:

    I started home educating dd2 just before Christmas and we've been doing really well...that was until this question on reverse percentages:

    There are 6000 people at an ice hockey match.

    The announcer says this is exactly 40% more people that the previous match.

    [1] Explain why the announcer is incorrect.

    We've worked out the percentages and get that there would have bee 4286 people at the previous match. I don't get why the announcer is wrong! [2] Any Elite maths geniuses out there?

    Well, I'm dealing with non-shopping related matters on here at the moment, so here goes!

    [1] Are you sure you really want a detailed explanation?

    [2] Possibly:rotfl:. Or even probably:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:.

    Just been watching the viewer feedback programme on BBC News - talk about people being literal, pedantic and picking over hairs of perceived wrongness on here: it seems they're 'pedants corner' on the BBC programme tonight. I don't agree with any of the comments at all: people being offended by taking turns of phrase literally when it's clear that's not what was really meant! And, come on, spoken news reports aren't necessarily always a polished work (particularly not in a 'live' news environment and pressured deadlines) and what people say in speech, even in newscasting, is not necessarily to be assessed and held to the same standard as a considered and revised piece of writing.

    Maybe I've been moulded, by social pressure, to be constantly less pedantic and become too generous here:rotfl:.

    I don't consider the interview with Pres. Assad, which, rightly, led the bulletins, was "giving him a platform" - not exclusively that anyway, even if that may have been an inadvertent effect. It was clearly stated in the accompanying reports surrounding it the widely-held disputes against what the President said, and quite properly in my view. Oops, me defending the BBC.

    Anyway, back to money-saving maybe...

  • I seem to find that ppl seem to take offence at the slightest thing these days .or perhaps im getting old.my dh says im turning into one of the grumpy old women...and im only 52:rotfl:
    also its very easy these days to take every comment, said or written in 2 different ways.perhaps its because noone talks face to face anymore so its really hard to read someone..

    I think you misread [misreed] me there. I don't think there is anything patronising at all in your post and you're completely right: there's nothing patronising at all there.:)
  • All this talk of maths problems reminded me of this....
    [skip to next post if you don't want brain-ache:)]

    How to Make the Universe Collapse
    (using alegebra)
    Let's start with any two numbers, a and b, which just happen to be the same, So:
    a = b
    Now watch very carefully, I shall do this only once;)....
    (where it says a2 or b2, it means a squared or b squared - the superscript numbers won't display properly is all)
    Multiply both sides by a: a2 [i.e., a squared] = ab
    Subtract b2 from both sides: a2 - b2 = ab - b2
    On the left-hand side is the difference of two squares so we know that a2 - b2 = (a + b)(a - b). On the right-hand side is ab - b2; both bits will divide by b, so it can be written as b(a - b). So we get this:
    (a + b)(a - b) = b(a - b)
    Now divide both sides by (a - b) to get:
    (a + b) = b
    There is nothing to multiply the brackets by, so get rid of them:
    a + b = b
    Move the +b across and change the + sign:
    a = b - b
    So we have:
    a = 0
    Remember that a and b could be any number, so we've just proved that any number equals zero. This implies that any measurement of time, distance or weight is non-existent .... so bye-bye Universe:D

    Hi I did a shop earlier and got the Simple cleanser. The glitch worked perfectly. I used Simple Kind to Skin moisturising facial wash 150ml. Code 5011451103870 as the trigger and I bought two packs of the simple wipes that were also in the 3 for £5 deal.
