Expanding on the 'multiple inputs' - some just have one DVI and one VGA input. So if this is the case then double check whether your laptop can output DVI, maybe using an adapter. (My HP Elitebook has got a VGA output and also a 'displayport' which can output DVI via an adapter).
Then you can use the buttons on the monitor to switch between the 2 inputs.
Using TeamViewer or RDP is only valid when both systems are up and running, but the OP said he wants to be able to use the laptop when he's 'updating' the tower PC, which could well involve switching it off...0 -

Actually, both machines (PC tower and Laptop) have HDMI sockets, but, unfortunately, the monitor doesn't.but the OP said he wants to be able to use the laptop when he's 'updating' the tower PC, which could well involve switching it off...
Actually, I want to be able to connect the laptop to the monitor, so I can use it on the big screen, while updating the laptop, or while using it to do MS Office stuff.
The laptop is brilliant for portable/travel use, but when using it at home, I prefer to use it on the large monitor.0 -
Used a KVM at home and work, never use anything else again, quick and easy to switch between two and some even have a keyboard shortcut.0

Yip had one with the keyboard shortcut (double scroll lock / up arrow) for many years. (it's PS2).
I also had a KVM with a stand-alone button but it was too flimsy and died after a year or so.
Looking for a dual monitor KVM (usb) at the minute.0
