Just wondering, how long does a search stay on your credit report?

Depends on the credit reference agency and the type of search. 1 or 2 years.

It seems though its only the last 6 months worth of searches that have any impact according to some posters on here.

Thanks both, I just looked at my report through the Noddle service and they seem to have searches going back about 2yrs. Seems like a very long time?
